I FINALLY jumped on the Firefox bandwagon about a year ago due to the lack of decent adblocker software for IE. (some of the ads here were atrocious) I dumped FF a couple of weeks ago and switched to Chrome because of the high memory usage/memory leaks of FF.
It's bad when you have 8 Gb of RAM and still get warnings about "high memory use."

I don't really care for Chrome, but it certainly seems tons faster than FF...

I haven't used Opera since the late 90's or early 2000's...didn't care for it back then at all.

Were you using FF7? It's reduced the memory leaks and memory demands for me.

I've been using FF almost exclusively for a couple years now, but v7 is pissing me off. It just checks out after an hour or two of running - All tabs spinning on connecting, nothing works until I close & relaunch. IE works fine.

6 didn't do this, it all started with 7. Seriously annoying.

That sounds strange. Just to experiment, create and use a new FF profile and see if it still has issues.

I love Opera, but have been unimpressed with Firefox and Chrome. Honestly I've been most surprised by IE9, I swear it's the fastest for me, but I still only use it when I have a need for an alternate browser, rare but happens.

The one thing that tends to annoy me about Firefox is its weird stuttering problem. I don't know what it is, but if you leave it open for awhile with a ton of tabs open, it eventually has a problem where it sporadically accesses your CPU for some reason (I see around 12% or so CPU usage). The sporadic access usually occurs every few seconds, and whenever that happens, Firefox sort of "pauses"/stutters for a second.

I notice this problem a lot when I'm typing or watching a video, because the letters will not appear immediately or the video (not audio) will pause for a split second.

How do I fix it? Close Firefox and reopen it. Even having the exact same tabs opened upon start up, it runs fine after that.

I haven't seen it yet in FF7, but FF6 was really bad with cache management. The problem that I noticed is that eventually, it just had to sit there and monkey around with the cache while it was trying to load a webpage. Doing this caused the site's load time to go from ~1s to around 5s, and you could tell that it was a cache-related issue, because my WD Caviar Blacks are quite audible (I moved my cache to my D drive).

Also, I tried to delete my cache one time while I was in Firefox. Worst. Idea. Ever. It literally took around 10+ minutes just to delete the cache!

Firefox 7 is a lot better with memory usage. I used to easily go over 1.2GB with just FF (PluginContainer would use more depending on any flash content, etc). I think the last time I looked, I was using around 800MB.

I'm more intrigued by why someone would have 20-30 or even 100 tabs open. How do you know what is where? I have enough trouble keeping up with 5 or 6. :)

Same here. I currently have 8 open, and I'm only actively using 3. I could close out the other 5, and it wouldn't impact me at all. I understand people have different browsing habits and all, but I never understood how people can cope with 15+ tabs.

awesome bar (firefox term, not mine) searches through the tabs to find the correct one, plus you can sort it through tab candy.

having 80+ is not a huge deal

What version are you using? I'm still on 3.6.xx and I have absolutely ZERO issues.

So I assume you went to 4.x or higher. Why would you go to whatever version if you have issues? 3.6 is still fully supported and updated regularly. So go back to whatever version you had no issues with

I'm on v3.67 and haven't had any issues, either. I tend not to upgrade to a new version for months so that they have time to work the bugs out. From what these people are saying, it sounds like FF 4 isn't so hot.

I was using 3.6 for a long time, until recently when I bought a new hard drive. I have 5 installed now, and seem to have a few more problems. I think most of the problems are caused by the browser being open for almost a month now without a restart. (It's still only using 334mb of memory, not seeing the memory issues everyone complains about.)

I might still end up switching back to 3.6.

I use Chrome as my porn browser but I don't like it.

I don't have these issues. Although flash has crashed more often than I'd like with youtube. It's annoying but I blame flash.
