firefox error: phone book entry? WTF?

in firefox, whenever it can't load a page, i get not only the "could not load page" error dialog, but before that, i get this annoying "could not find entry in system phone book" or some bullsh!t. how did this start happening, and what can i do to stop it?

i've checked for viruses (AVG Free) and spyware (Ad-Aware, Spybot). any suggestions?

the first dialog is titled: Network Connections

it says:

"Cannot load dialog.
Error 623: The system could not find the phone book entry for this connection."

Then I get:

Dialog Title: Alert

it says:

(website address) could not be found. Please check the name and try again.

This only comes up with firefox can't find a page. it doesn't come up when internet explorer can't find a page.

weird. there aren't any virtual private connections in my network connections, and i've never used one... i wonder if i got some bug that tried to create one? or did create one but it's not working?
