Firefox doesn't update in Linux Mint

I am running Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon (2.2.16) 64-bit with kernel 3.13.0.24-generic. Installed is Firefox 38.0 for Linux Mint. I noticed there are several verions beyond 38.0 that are available, but I cannot fire out why the one I have will not update with the other updates.

FF was installed through the LM S/W Mgr. so I always figured it would upgrade accordingly. Nope. I guess I can rename the original folder(s) and install cleanly outside the LM S/W Mgr.

Suggestions, thoughts?

Isn't 38 an esr release? Maybe you're on that channel, and it's not offering a newer version.

When I installed it more than a year ago it was the only one listed in the LM17 S/W Mgr. I chose that route thinking the S/W Mgr would update.

You could check to see if the package is being held, and remove the hold. Dunno how you'd do that in software manager. I use Synaptic, and sometimes apt-get for package management.

I'm on MInt 17.2 and have FF44 installed. I don't remember doing it, but have been automagical.

Did you choose custom mirrors, and have you verified that those mirrors are accessible/updated?

I don't know about the mirrors. I presume you are talking about how I acquired the original installation copy. If there is a recommended location (mirror) please let me know.

That's what I was thinking too. My 17.0.11 ESR is already on the latest 17, but on my Firefox 38.4.0 ESR it won't even upgrade to 38.6.1 on it's own, let alone 44.

You could try extracting the latest tar.gz from Mozilla ftp, then just clicking on /firefox/firefox, or replace your old firefox directory with it's contents

Open Software Sources and see what mirrors you are using. When you click the link to the mirror, a new window pops up and runs a speed test against all mirrors. You should generally use the fastest mirror.

You can see when I chose the fastest mirror for Base, in that particular instance it set an IP address, not a domain name, so if the server moved to a new IP I wouldn't get updates from that repo.

If you've never changed the mirror this shouldn't be a problem. If you have changed it, click the "Restore the default settings" button at the bottom to reset it.

I'm on Qiana. Mine says the same thing for Main (qiana), but the Base is showing http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu

Oh crap! I'm embarrassed to say this, but in looking in the update manager, preferences, somehow firefox (and Google Chrome and LINUX) got placed on the Ignore Updates tab. Son of b_tch!

This must have been something I did when I conducted the original installation and needed them to not update. OK, where's the brick wall to rack my head against ...

OK, I released Linux from jail this morning. 😛 Now it is on Rosa (17.3) and along with it FF44.

I get this when trying to update it:

Failed to fetch http://dl.google.com/linux/chrome/deb/dists/stable/Release Unable to find expected entry 'main/binary-i386/Packages' in Release file (Wrong sources.list entry or malformed file)
Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Guessing the repository it is trying to use either has ceased updates or changed locations.

OK, but according to About Google Chrome screen I have 64-bit installed. I guess the LM update thinks otherwise.

The repository has always been setup to check for both 32- and 64-bit.

I was wondering why I was getting that error message yesterday. I just removed it from the repository.

I do have a game that works on Linux that requires 32 flash and I was able to get it from the 32 bit install of chrome. I wonder how I will accomplish that now?
