firefox & activeX/java support

afaik firefox restricts activex completely... while i personally haven't had any problems with this or even noted any differences in the websites i browse, it causes tons of trouble at work.

i recently disabled IE and made firefox the default browser on all 20 computers and within a day got complaints from everyone because it doesn't display some sites properly... these are mainly insurance company sites that have a login area etc. i also found that it doesn't with neat little dynamic menus like where you click on an optio n and it changes to a new sub-menu or opens up another one underneath, stuff like that

i'm guessing this is mainly due to activex... am i right?

if so, will there ever be a fix for this? can't they have a whitelist or blacklist of sites to enable it for certain pages?


also as far as JAVA is concerned:
i'm not sure how they implement it in firefox but i've found it really buggy... yahoo pool crashes constantly..

From your description (site rendering, dynamic menus), it sounds more like crappy job by the webmasters than it is with a problem with Firefox because Gecko is one of the most accurate rendering engines out there. My guess is that the webmasters on those sites were using IE-only JavaScript code.. 🙂

Firefox doesn't support ActiveX because it's proprietary to MS and is one of the reasons IE has so many security holes. Not sure on Java though.. tried installing the newest version? Seems to work fine for me

hmm if thats true about lazy webmasters that sucks! i'd really like ppl to start using firefox here at work so i wouldn't have to do a spyware removal routine every couple weeks or so... i guess until ppl start coding websites properly it won't happen 🙁

as for java the problem with it is that it works fine for a while but if i'm also browsing with another open window at times the entire browser just collapses and closes

install MS anti-spyware on their PCs for now. Beta = free and works pretty damn well

It doesn't restrict ActiveX, it doesn't support it at all.

Not likely. Most likely the sites are just really poorly done and were only tested in IE, usually things like dynamic menus are done in JavaScript.

FF doesn't implement Java at all, the only way to get Java support is from the browser plugin from Sun. JavaScript is a competely different story.

Fire anyone who frequents sites that download spyware. Or just choose a better browser, choose Opera.

lol thats easier said than done
i work for an insurance broker and all big insurance companies here in brazil use activex and java in their websites. what am i supposed to do call the companies up and tell them to stop? they will just tell me to use IE...
it is essential that we are able to access these websites for work too

Isn't the Brazilian government making a big push for linux in many different areas? Maybe you really should call up those companies ... 🙂
