Firefox 57 Released

Yes, I just received the update to 57 and so far so good. I was relieved to see that my few add-ins had already been updated to be compatible with this release.

It's very cool, but much more Chrome-like in terms of look and feel. Depending on your preference, this isn't a bad thing. I have noticed that my yahoo mail keeps logging me out even if I tell it to keep me signed in. Hmmm.

Just got it too... not sure if I notice any difference honestly. It seems to be just as fast as before
Now have to wait or try to find some replacement add-ons for the following
  • EnchancedSteam -- absolutly needed, to prevent buy stuff twice 🙂
  • FireGestures ( how does FF not have native mouse gestures?) Or some other mouse gestures SmartUP as replacement
  • Opendownload2 (seems function is now built in?)
  • Status4Evar - nice to have the status bar back

Well two things that I found out

1 -- I have noticed some screen tearing when scrolling, for example even on these forums.
-Turning on hardware acceleration seems to have fixed it

2 -- I like my tabs and bookmark toolbar below the main address bar so had to do the following
create userchrome.css file in the following location
Code:
C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\RANDOM.default\chrome
and add the following to it
Code:
@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */

#navigator-toolbox toolbar:not(#nav-bar):not(#toolbar-menubar) {-moz-box-ordinal-group:10}
#TabsToolbar {-moz-box-ordinal-group:100!important}

I also miss noscript... these days, it is pretty much required.

Here is a link to Google Doc that has a list of popular addons and if they are ported or not

And with that, I found a replacement for FireGestures called smartUp Gestures Here

Mozilla Firefox 57 offers statistically significant speed-up over 52.5 ESR (32-bit, is not using 64-bit important?) in JavaScript benchmarks JetStream (142 to 170), Kraken (1300 to 1100 ms), and Octane (27k to 30k) on Intel Core i5-7200U 3.1 GHz (SpeedShift Energy-Performance Preference 2) and DDR4-2133 C15. What happened?

Page renders seems waaaay faster to me. All my core extensions are still compatible but it seems like some adblocking isn't working quite right as I have blank gaps on pages.

Maybe spoke too soon... when opening a new tab the whole browser seems to lock up sometimes.

Why? I haven't used anything like it in Chrome based browsers and haven't ran into issues?
With flash being pretty much dead (finally!), the next avenue of attack uses Javascript.
I like to know exactly what a site wants me to run on my web client, and authorized accordingly.

I see Mozilla is advertising this release. Good time to add new users I guess, with a new extension model implemented.

Does anyone know of an add on, like Theme Font and Size Changer, which no longer does just that, so I can increase the size and colour of the fonts used on the Bookmarks Toolbar ? The eyes are going.

I like it. The new UI design is awesome. I haven't had any problems with add ons and the memory footprint is much, much smaller.

After reading some reviews here, I downloaded it and I am going to test it out. I was a long-time Firefox user until Symantec/Firefox didn't place nice together, and Identity Safe (Symantec extensions) wouldn't work at all with it for something like 18 months. I then switched over to Chrome. Hopefully this new version is good enough for me to switch back.

Thanks for this tip, works well !!

Tabs on top was really starting to bug me as it was the first thing I set when Classic Theme Restorer was still working.

Just one question though - will this code keep working with subsequent releases?
I seem to recall reading somewhere that these .css scripts become non-functional if the version FF version changes.

I like Firefox 57 a lot! 🙂
