Firefox 52 Released

With respect to JavaScript, Firefox 52 includes the Mozilla JavaScript engine and is progressing towards support for ECMAScript 2016 in Firefox 54. Expect support for JavaScript be around for a long time yet.

However, the future may belong to WebAssembly which is now available in Firefox 52. Backed by Mozilla, Microsoft, Google and Apple, WebAssembly provides a universal compile target for C, C++ and Rust to allow applications to run in the browser at near native speeds.

Zen Garden is a WebAssembly demo – high bandwidth Internet access recommended.

Well, for my XP box Firefox 52 is a no go. I may consider the last ESR version of Firefox, if it will still allow unsigned addons to be used.

One of the announcements I read said 52ESR would still run on XP.

I think I'm giving up on Firefox though. First Firebug quit development over changing extension requirements. Now Gmail's calling won't work without the plugin. So I'm moving to Chromium. It seems to be faster too.

have you tried opera 36 which is still getting a little support from opera but no new updated versions like opera 37 etc.i have been using opera 36 with windows xp and it's mega fast. just updated my firefox to firefox esr 52 and it's fast.

I think my brother has Opera 36 on his XP computer. But I personally prefer how firefox looks and it is much more customizable than Opera. Does Firefox ESR 52 still allow unsigned add ons ? Where can I download the Off Line installer for ESR52 ? I may not need it yet, but good to get before it disappears.

Got the off line installer for Firefox 52 ESR from the Mozilla site. Don't need to use it yet, as the sites I go to still work with FF 47.0.2 but it is good to get the installer before it disappears.

Well, i just watched a video on amazon and I don't have silverlight installed. I'm pretty sure they have moved to HTML5, unless Prime video uses a different player than the regular videos that you buy from amazon?

Haha,,, too funny, since Firefox started to block unsecured connections, i cannot download it since there own site is being blocked

New releases are an "I wonder what I'm losing this time" thing. I'm not ready to switch yet, but am reserving judgment for the 57 release where everything goes to hell. Firefox is definitely slower than Chromium, but the extensive addons make up for the lack of speed. Take those away, and there's only philosophical reasons to stay, and philosophy only takes you so far...

I tried tried the FF 52.0 ESR on my Toshiba Win10 64 Home laptop and while it did allow Google Toolbar 7.1.201100512W to install, it had issues with it. Toolbar was shrunk at bit in height, the toolbar options did not work and my custom buttons were not displayed. I know I can make bookmarks for most of these buttons, but I like them easy to find on a toolbar. There are extensions like Custom Buttons and Googlebar Lite, but neither will let me make or import my own buttons (which are stored as .xml) nor can I edit the buttons that come with either extension. Perhaps when all the new way extensions are done, someone will come up with a way to use .xml buttons.

Okay , I found a workaround for GoogleToolbar (at least for what I use it for) and that was to add the sites (UPS / USPS / Fedex / DHL tracking) and couple of others as Bookmarks and put them in the Bookmarks Toolbar ... also had to put back the Firefox Search box .. This will work just needs a few tweaks.

1): Firefox default search box is way too big. It will get smaller if I add more bookmarks on that bar. Any other way to resize it ? (height is okay, just way too wide)

2): My new Bookmarks did not generate a Favicon .. need to find a way to add them. Not essential, but it would be nice to have them.

You can resize the Firefox default search box by dragging its left edge. The Favicon icon gets updated when I click on the bookmark after saving it.

I tried to resize (FF 47.0.2) ... it does not want to do it .... Will keep trying. Thanks for the info on the Favicons .. I just did that and they did indeed now show them. All except MSN Mail (outlook) which likes to show that idiotic 4 little color squares instead of an envelope

That's the trick, finding all your extensions in Chromium. Here's what I've found so far:

Firefox -> Chromium
CookieSafe -> Vanilla
GreaseMonkey -> TamperMonkey
NoScript -> ScriptSafe
Stylish -> Stylish
AdBlock -> AdBlock
FoxyProxy -> FoxyProxy
Privacy Badger -> Privacy Badger
HTTPS Everywhere -> HTTPS Everywhere
Firebug (obsolete 🙁) -> none 🙁 (but the developer tools plus Live CSS Editor do a lot.)
FireFinder (obsolete 🙁) -> $$('object') in Console
Tab Mix Plus -> None ;( (so far)

You might like to try uBlock origin(adblocker), and uMatrix(kind of a NoScript thing). I like ublock on firefox, and chromium is the primary development target, so it should be better if anything. I've *just* downloaded umatrix, so I'm not familiar, but it has a good reputation amongst technically oriented users. Both are also libre software, which I appreciate, and use /almost/ exclusively. A proprietary program has to be pretty special to get me to use it.

I know you all know this already but here it is again.

starting with Firefox 53 (slated for release on April 18), non-WebExtensions add-ons will no longer be accepted for signing / display on Mozilla's add-on site

Good luck everyone!

It kinda sucks but oh well.

Did you know Stylish was bought out by a new company
According to Justin Hindman, Stylish's new owner as of October 2016, the add-on will share anonymized user data with SimilarWeb, a company that provides data analytics and market insight for various online services.

I use StyleRRR now.
