Firefox 4: One generation ahead of everyone else speedwise

The problem with FF is IMHO the built in sqllite thingy. Anyway with my ssd ff does feel alot faster. Opens instantly and no lag problems of any kind.

But in generall chrome does seem to be better on lighter hardware. On my netbook i have both installed. Chrome starts way faster but FF has flash and add block which more than compensates any other downsides because flash is just poison on netbooks...

I tried the beta for a few days and I have to say I was less than impressed. I have a feeling IE 9.0 will hands down blow everyone out of th water this go around... If not ever step going forward... I hope the rest can compete just enough to keep MS inovating again.. Kind of like Intel and AMD..

Chrome to me feels more laggy as you use more tabs from what I could tell.

All browsers exhibit freezes and stutters at a point like Dulanic said. It is not a problem with the browsers. I seen this really bad freezing and stuttering so far on Opera, Firefox, Chrome, and IE. I know what the problem is exactly too.

Actually it happens in Chrome too the same exact problem they are having. It happens on all browsers.

Oh and Firefox 4 is as fast as Chrome now if not faster. So that issue is pretty much gone now.

Please don't make up stuff, it hurts your credibility.

I was primarily referring to his comment that "the performance problems happen in Chrome too", which is incorrect. Nobody can argue that Chrome starts up as slow as Firefox does. The difference in startup time is huge, especially on slow machines. Nobody can argue that one slow tab in Chrome slows the rest of the browser down. Chrome tabs are all independant processes of one another, they don't affect each other at all. Not even Firefox 4 has this feature. There's still a huge gap in javascript and flash performance between Firefox and Chrome. I'm not even talking about benchmarks, the difference is very noticeable in real world applications. I gave an example earlier that anyone could try, I wonder if he did.

As for Firefox 4 being as fast as Chrome, unless there are benchmarks that prove it, it is in fact making things up. I don't doubt that Firefox 4 is faster than the current release of FF however.

Yes it does, but not as many as Firefox. Chrome's adblock is also not as good as Firefox's(This is the biggest reason to use Firefox over Chrome today IMO).

i can not live without adblock, i did not realize how much i missed it till i tried one of these new beta's and it was not working for a little bit. sites are loading lots of ads on sites nowadays.

I have to disagree there I found Opera faster then Firefox 4 beta 5,can't comment on Chrome since I've not used it for awhile,but if you do a google preview/review seach on the net they all seem to point to Chrome/Opera still top 2 for speed.

Firefox 4 is a nice improvement over 3.6.9 in speed from my experience in use and extensions have always been the strong point of Firefox.

Personally I'm sticking with Opera due to being best allrounder for my needs ie speed,stability,features etc...end of the day each to their own but you always get different opinions.

I'll say we are lucky nowadays since there are a lot of good free browsers to choose from so we are the ones that finally win.

Yeah true. I just wish Opera would work with my greasemonkey scripts. At least finally got the roboform to work but if I could just get the same kind of add ons in Opera it would be golden. I can never understand why Opera doesn't allow more flexible in their add ons?

Opera likes to be in control of their software. They don't want people to install an addon lose their identity and blame Opera because some addon opened a vulnerability. I've found 90% of addons are already inside Opera in one way or another. Your greasemonkey problem I still have no idea pcslookout. I use many converted grasemonkey scripts as userjs in Opera with no issues.

Though honestly outside of greasemonkey (Which I have working again I don't know what the issues with the ones your using are) which addons are you missing in Opera?

using FF4b5 on a fresh install of win7ultx64 on a 120GB sandforce HDD and holy crap is it amazingly fast/snappy. Although to be fair I used IE8 to download FF4b5 and it wasn't like I was in agony using it, I think people make way too big of a deal over speed.

It might have been an issue a while ago when the difference could be measured in full seconds but now we're getting down to milliseconds, its pretty ridiculous.

Its not just adblock that sells me on FF but adblock + noscript and the overall ease with which users can setup the browser to look and perform the way they want it to.

In its day, Firefox was faster than IE. But lately, especially when using extensions (good/popular ones) Firefox is slow and sluggish when multitasking. And you can't blame it on extensions anymore since Chrome showed that you can have a very fast browser even with extensions. Haven't tried Firefox 4 yet.

Yeah he will Firefox 4 is much faster! Unfortunately I can't use it yet because of greasemonkey I need my greasemonkey scripts. May need to wait for my userscripts to be upgraded as well once Firefox 4 final comes out too because I got a dev version of greasemonkey to work but the scripts themselves refuse to work. Seem like they want to but never load. Oh well either way going to have to wait for the final version of Firefox 4 because that is the only time the script authors are willing to fix the problem.

pcslookout, there is a user javascript that emulates greasemonkey for Opera. I tried a few greasemonkey scripts, and they seemed to work.
