They don't tell you about the DRM plugin from Adobe before they download it for you, and it is also impossible to set to "ask to activate" instead of "never activate".

Full name is "Primetime Content Decryption Module provided by Adobe Systems, Incorporated"

Given Mozilla's otherwise pretty stellar reputation for supporting an "open web", this is rather disappointing news.

Edit: Especially the auto-download stuff. That will just make DRM more prevalent rather than less.

I was just thinking of trying Fireofx again. I'm getting so sick of Chrome. It's an unstable POS now. Fresh installation of Windows, only one plugin (Adblock Plus) and in the last month it's crashed 4 times and corrupted it's preferences file twice.

Considering that AFAIK it isn't suddenly doing that for thousands of people, it is more likely to be a problem at your end.

When firefox goes to a new version number just wait until the next update. They always screw something up and release an update to fix the issue. Let other people beta test their releases.

So true! I usually wait until v##.0.1 or v##.1 to upgrade as well, there always seems to be a ##.0.1/2 that fixes something it broke as you say. :awe:

but they usually release 7 or 8 BETAs before its final........very sad that they still need a .01 or .05 update to really be stable

Waterfox 38.0 is out too, just updated. Wonder if that version is DRM-free or not?

Edit: Guess not. There was a checkbox next to "Play DRM Content" by default. Seriously, WTF Mozilla Foundation.

WTF has DRM anything to do with FF or any other Browser for that matter.

If I can't get to where I want go and DL a file, I'll fire up Net Vampire or CuteFTP.

Not saying FF today, NetVampire or Cute is full of crap - But you have to learn how to strip them.

The DRM here is a DRM container being installed *WITHOUT* the permission of the user.
The purpose of this DRM container is so you can play protected content.
It also comes from Adobe proud owner of the highly exploitable flash player.

If Mozilla would have just asked which version of FF you wanted, this would all be moot. But, instead, they ram it down your throat via the auto-updater.

I'm happy to report that Firefox 38.0 for Mint 1.0, does not have a "Play DRM Content" checkbox.

Probably because Adobe doesn't consider itself to be allied with "those damn Linux-running hippies" :p

Firefox 38 - I'm frankly amazed that they took the time to redesign the Options UI but didn't bother to ensure that the style of that and about:addons would actually match.
