“Firefox 3.6 will be available for download at www.firefox.com on Thursday, January 21st at 9:30am Pacific Standard Time,” reads the announcement posted by Mozilla...

"One of the most important changes in Firefox 3.6 is the added performance that the new browser will offer end users. Firefox 3.6 is no less than 20% faster compared to its predecessor, version 3.5, according to Mozilla. Users that feel comfortable with running pre-release software can grab the second Release Candidate (RC) of Firefox 3.6 released a few days ago. Firefox 3.6 RC2 is as close as possible to the final release and will give users a pretty good idea of what’s coming tomorrow, January 21."

I've been using 3.6 since b2 and I've been happy with it so far. The RC's certainly have felt faster than 3.5 and the new taskbar features for Win7 are definitely nice!

I like the speed improvements as well. Even though Firefox isn't the fastest browser atm, but its ability to be customized to fit end-user's needs beats any other browser out there.

wow, 20% faster than 3.5. that is what i am using so i am going to try it and see. it is lightning fast for me now.

I guess I will do the update on Friday or Saturday. I just hope all my addons are still compatible with 3.6 .. sometimes, we need to wait for them to be updated. Any issues with the bookmarks from 3.5 to 3.6 ? ?

The only thing that matters to me is if they fixed the ram hogging problem when keeping firefox open for days. I highly doubt it.

You can disable addon compatibility checking. I've never had issues when in the same major version. In other words, addons tend to work in all of 3.x, but will be more likely to break going from 3.x to 4.x, although many even work across versions.

Where might I do this? Not seeing anything in addons, options, or about:config

Nevermind, I googled it.

Edit again, I applied this to 3.5.7 and it worked fine. Installed 3.6, and it disabled addons. Did the fix again, but its not working now 🙁

Last edit, they changed this in 3.6. You now need to include the version number in the setting. So you need to use this: extensions.checkCompatibility.3.6

Ah, ok. I just installed 3.6, and so far it looks like everything's working, even officially non compatible extensions.

Edit:
I use the MrTech toolkit to handle my extensions. Maybe it automatically took care of the max version option. It's handy to have in any case. Check it out...

Edit2:
Confirmed. The entry was automatically added.

Edit3:
The Personas quicky theme switcher is pretty slick. The couple I've tried don't seem to affect menu color which is a bit of a drawback, but I like having different themes every so often. This method is much quicker than installing a full blown theme.

just installed it on a few machines.. love it so far, definitely can notice the speed increase and the personas work better too. woo hoo!

Installed on office pc just now. Only issue was I had to reset to IE for Default Browser .. some apps here insist on opening with that. And the computer needed
to reboot to finish install. Maybe because it was trying to set Firefox as Default.
I need to recheck the check boxes next time I install it. Otherwise ok.

What changes are you guys seeing?

One thing I notice is the tabs function the same way they do in chrome. When you open a new tab it places the tab next to your current tab, unlike before where it would open it at the far right.

Yea, so far that's the biggest change, and I don't like it. I'm gonna have to poke around in the config and see if I can set it back.

I noticed the tab thing too, gonna have to get used to it. The personas seem faster/easier to use and the browser overall is faster. I haven't noticed any other major changes yet.

For those who want to change it back, the instructions are on the bottom of this page...

http://news.cnet.com/8301-30685_3-10404666-264.html

First type "about:config" in the Firefox address bar. You'll get a warning that you're tinkering with Firefox's innards and you should be careful, but this isn't brain surgery, so don't be frightened. Click the "I'll be careful, I promise" button, and you'll see a big list of all the browser settings that can be tweaked.
Next, in the text box labeled "Filter:", type "tabs.insertRelatedAfterCurrent"; you should see just one entry below. In the column marked "Value," double-click on the word "true" to change it to "false." You're done.

It also gives an argument for why the new method is better. I disagree, and it screws up my organization for the way I use a browser.

I'm not gonna hassle changing the tabs back. I use chrome pretty often and have gotten used to it. I'll just embrace it.

Have you guys found any personas that you like? I'm looking for something that doesn't drastically change the default feel, but makes it look better than default gray boringness.

I've found several I like. I'm currently using Christmas Village, as it goes with my current winter computer theme. I generally like dark themes, and there were many choices in the few I've looked at. The preview is nice for seeing how it looks without actually installing.

Btw, Thunderbird has an update available also, and there's a plugin to enable Personas on that. I'm currently using Blue Blue Christmas on Thunderbird.

Edit:
Here's my tops...
