Firefox 3.0.5 constantly crashes when I close Gmail tabs

System Specs are in Sig

Running Firefox 3.0.5 without any extensions or themes (fresh install). Deleted all personal folders from the previous install, which had the same crashing issues whenever I closed a Gmail tab. Also tried a fresh install of Firefox 3.1 beta 2, and it also crashed whenever I closed a Gmail tab. I'm not sure what is causing this; it seems like this just randomly cropped up recently. I haven't installed much new software either recently.

Using Norton Internet Security 2008, but the problem also happened when I was using Symantec Corporate.

Does anyone have any clues as to fixing this? Firefox is my favorite browser by far, and Chrome or Opera simply can't give me the same experience. Thanks in advance.

This probably won't help, but with 3.0.5 on WinXP I've been getting crazy Firefox CPU loads - 50% (essentially one of my dual cores at 100%). If I open up task manager I'll see that FF's memory usage shoots up and then goes back down...takes about 10-15 seconds before the program is responsive again. It seems to mainly happen when I'm opening or closing tabs, which is why I'm posting in this thread. I've already unistalled/reinstalled FF once but still having the same problem.

Dont know if this will help you much, but i used to get crashes all the time with firefox, no matter what I was doing, or what was open,or how many windows I had open, and it was pissing me off. I uninstalled it, used my registry cleaner and got rid of anything in there with firefox name, went in my c drive and deleted the firefox folder. I installed a old ass firefox 2 install.exe I had on one of my cd's, and let it update it all the way to 3.05, and it hasnt crashed one time yet, no been using crazy CPU processes either. Of course Im saying this as I knock on wood, but it seems to have worked for me for some strange reason. May want to give it a shot, provided you can find a firefox 2 install exe somewhere. Mine is from around 8 months to a year old I think.

I completely uninstalled 3.0.5 and installed 3.1b2 - haven't had a problem since then. I found a number of people online having similar problems which most people had pinned down to a java or javascript problem. None of the suggested fixes helped me, but so far 3.1b2 has been rock solid.
