Thanks for the info. I just updated. Latest Firefox is using less memory on my system. Looking good so far.

Interesting, so will the first official version of 14 release actually be 14.0.1?

thanks!

Whatever happened to x.1, x.2, x.3, etc. versioning of software? How is it that we now go from 12.01 to 13.01 to 14.01 in a matter of weeks?

I think that developers at Mozilla are drinking too much and just throwing version numbers at us...

it isn't fun anymore

While I appreciate updates, this is a joke...they release a version, then next day is the beta of the next version WTF

Have you checked Chrome's latest version number? It's a lot higher than Firefox.

That's because they were updating at a moderate pace since ages

But Firefox is trying to play catch up now and it seems ridiculous...might as well just skip all these stupid version numbers and just make Firefox 21

I haven't noticed a single diff. from Firefox 6 till Firefox 14 to be honest

Where have you been for the last several months?

Anyway, I cannot understand why people gnash their teeth over the version #...13.1 vs 14...who cares? All I care about is that it continues to be upgraded and improved and they fix bugs. I could care less what version # they stick on it. If the next update is v 50, why would it matter?

Huh??

Anyway, I cannot understand why people gnash their teeth over the version #...13.1 vs 14...who cares?

Don't get me mixed up with the guy above who's ranting like someone kidnapped his baby. I just find it curious that this versioning behavior has become a common practice in the last few years. Seems to be at least a little marketing strategy behind it when it comes from a commercial software vendor, but I find it odd coming from open source projects.

I stopped using Firefox the other day. I just got sick and tired of it using a ridiculous amount of memory. When I closed it before switching to Chrome, it was using 3.2GB of RAM for maybe 20 tabs. The only thing that I'm missing out on is being able to use hotkeys with VBulletin (i.e. this forum).

EDIT:

To note, I don't care as much about it using a lot of memory, but the problem is that the software gets really hokey when it starts using that much memory. Video gets choppy and such. My guess is that the software just keeps on caching things. I don't know why it's necessary since connections are usually fast enough. That might explain why iTunes starts using a ridiculous amount of memory over time too. When I start it, it's using around 50MB of RAM, and I end up closing it around 500MB. :|

I remember reading that one reason for shifting to the current versioning is to accelerate the implementations of new major features. Previously they wait for the major release to implement those features e.g. the feature is already ready now but it has to wait for as it is set to release with version X which is still a few months/weeks/days away from scheduled release

Maybe there should be a stickied thread just for bitching about FF and version numbers...that way it doesn't fill threads about new releases/updates. It's gotten old.

you get the same people saying the same thing every time a new version of firefox comes out.

that is not firefox using the memory, you have an extension that is using that much memory. these last few versions of firefox have cut memory use way down. i had my browser open all day yesterday and it never went over 500mb all day. that is with 9-10 extensions running too.

This version numbering is nothing new and has been around for a year now. Who CARES what the number is? It's a NUMBER. It has no negative impact on your life in any way shape or form. Seriously.

Just so you don't get caught off guard and s**t your pants again, a new version of Firefox will be out in 6 weeks. Along with it's beta, pre-beta and nightly release.

Don't understand why people don't want to update their browser for security fixes and possibly vulnerabilities as well as performance increases.

I also have a free ipad for all these people. :p

I've noticed that it's gotten a lot faster and now the new homepage is more like opera for starters.

I don't think I've ever had a crash with FF. The only addon I use is Ad Block Plus. Perhaps it's one of your other add ons?
