Firefox @ 100% CPU Usage

When ever i middle-click a link, the page loading in the background causes firefox to jump to 100% CPU Usage and make the mouse cursor skip so that i basically have to sit and wait until the page is fully loaded.

On that note, nearly anything that uses large amounds of CPU time causes the cursor to skip. I don't recall this happening in any of my other systems.

Anyone else experience this? How do i get rid of it?

This is a non-answer, but try mozilla. I noticed firefox was more processor intensive on my home machine than mozilla.

Do you have any extensions installed? I noticed that some use up more CPU then the normal browser alone.

Maybe one is messed up....

Is it everypage, or is it maybe with ones with java or macromedia flash or whatnot?

I have TBE, mouse gestures, and developer toolbar, IEview installed. It's happening with AT Forums, but i'll try a site without flash ads...

Which version of Firefox are you running? It might be TBE causing problems. It has always had some weird quirks.

HOLY CHRIST firefox is FAST without any extensions installed. Of course, now i dont have the functionality i want...

And yeah, i think that was the problem. When i load a new page, cpu usage jumps up to about 40-50 percent for a few seconds but then quickly throttles down. No mouse skipping to speak of.

i'm going to try to enable extensions one by one to see which it is. 100 bucks says it's TBE. TBE is like adding bloatware for FF. Too bad it's so damned useful...

Oh, and i'm running 0.9, btw.

Hm...one thing i do notice with all extensions disabled is that when i open the bookmark manager and right click on anything, the context menu that pops up makes the whole machine slow down. Not enough to make winamp skip, but enough to make my mouse cursor skip and CPU usage to get to >85%. This happened with TBE installed, too, but it looks like it might be just a flaw with FF then...

Ok, someone try this: open firefox and task manager. Arrange task manager until you can see firefox's CPU usage. Now wait til it throttles down to <5%. Now start moving the mouse cursor really fast over the screen. Firefox will jump CPU usage to 30-60% just from moving the mouse cursor! Weird...

I tried it and it only goes up to 9% for me. Maybe it's because Firefox is processing all of the mousever and hover stuff that might be on the page.

i've read SO MANY negative things (incompatibilites, bugs, slow speed) about TBE that i never ever even bothered to install it.

you should compare that to other apps you have open and move the mouse. I didnt test that yet.
But if its true that FF uses a lot of cycles w/ moving the mouse....well maybe post something over at their support forum ?! Then the devs can look into that

The only thing I want out of TBE is loading everything in tabs instead of new windows. :(

Yeah, they should really pull that into the browser itself. TBE is absurdly large.

If they won't even notice the existance of mozilla, I doubt they're going to go for adware. ;)

Google tabbrowser preferences. You'll have to click through the original webpage to find the guy continuing the work, but it's a less bloated (even has a lite version) that gives more options than Single Window 1.0. Let's you have things pop up when you want, and stay in tabs when you don't.

I must admit I prefer Mozilla to Firefox, however Opera(registered version) is still my favourite ;).

Microsoft need to do some serious work with IE if they ever want to be up there with Opera/Mozilla etc on security & features.

Opera isn't bad. I used it before Mozilla was ready for my platform of choice.

doing nothing in firefox with four tabs open has the thing eating up 70-90% CPU cycles...hmmm

might have to try out opera or go back to IE....i really like the tabs and browser itself though...unfortunate.

Is one of your tabs on a page that is doing something with javascript, dhtml, flash or java applets?
