The moox builds aren't GPL compliant. You shouldn't support him.

So? They're optimized for my CPU and I don't have to compile them myself. Until I can't download something like that for free, I don't see a problem with using them. Am I missing something?

1) The moox builds can actually be slower than the real ones
http://www.howtocreate.co.uk/browserSpeed.html

2) By not following the GPL it means that moox doesn't have a valid license to distribute the changes. This essentially means you are using an illegal version of free software.

3) By not disclosing the actual modifications made, you can never be sure what was added. Perhaps its monitoring your passwords, who knows. What you do know is that he took source code, violated the license he accepted it under, made changes he claims are for speed (which actually aren't), and then spits it back out to the world.

Hmmmmm, interesting. If theres just controversy, why doesn't there seem to be much outcry over at the mozillazine forums? Thats actually where I heard of it and it seems to be pretty common over there. Just wondering...maybe I'll go back to the official 1.02 tonight....

Thanks for the info on the MOOX builds guys. I've been using them for a while on various machines of mine. After reading that, I'm already half way through the process of getting them all back to official versions.

Interestingly enough, the "official release" installer builds include a commercial-style EULA, that purports to be an adhesion contract that takes away some of your rights, and I'm not convinced is GPL-compatible either. The official "ZIP" builds do not require you to agree to the EULA before installing - guess what - they were just discontinued.

So "GPL compliance" shouldn't really be used as a measuring stick to compare both the official and MOOX builds, because I believe that both of them would fail that test.

(*) Note that you can download and build Firefox, yourself, and that is GPL-compliant, but you can't call it 'Firefox', nor can you use the default icons - you'll have to re-draw or substitute them all yourself. (This may or may not apply, based on whether you plan on further distribution of your build - however, since the Firefox name and logo are a trademark issue, not a copyright issue, it would seem to me that even for a private-use-only build, you would still be prohibited from using them, if you don't have a specific trademark license in writing from the Mozilla Foundation to use their logos and name.) So you still can't even build a "GPL-compliant Firefox" at home, either.

Ooooh optimized for my processor! Hanging out in the basement of the science building again, are we?

 It isn't free.

Copyright law is important (however misguided it may be at the moment). Can't live with it, kill yourself.

At work, I use Firefox and can DL whatever I want just fine, but at home I can't get anything to DL or install w/o errors.

Both systems are WinXP with work behind a corporate network proxy and home running Panda AV with firewall behind a router. All other connectivity is fine, but Firefox keeps barfing.

When I try to install a theme from the Firefox site, it asks if I want to DL and then pops an error box reading:

Firefox could not download the file at

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/themes/qute/qute-3-fx.jar

because: Download error.

Any theme I try does the same thing and trying to right-click and save it says The link could not be saved.

What's weird is the Themes manager window shows Qute 3 and says Install Success, but when I click OK to close the error, it disappears.

I am running 1.02 here at home, but 1.01 did the same last week. Work is 1.01. I currently use Mozilla 1.75 for mail and browser, but am trying to switch to FF/TB combo. FF picked up my settings from Moz automatically.

When I try to DL anything from saving a picture to an MP3 from a server, the program freezes for several seconds - totally unacceptable. With only a few windows open, it's eating 141 MB of RAM and when it just finished a file, it froze again.

Semi-workaround: If I drag the link to GetRight, it'll DL to my HD and I can then drag it into the Themes window and it'll take, but that's about 20 steps too many if you ask me.

I've searched Google and Mozilla without any luck. Any ideas? TIA!

1.0.2 has crashed more than any previous version - and I'm just browsing the forums. Luckily, I have the Sessionsaver extension installed, which is a VERY good thing, otherwise I'd be a lot more aggravated about the crashes. Firefox just closes, and both Firefox's and Windows' error reporting windows come up. Wonder what the deal is now?
