Here's what's new in Firefox 1.0.1:

Improved stability
International Domain Names are now displayed as punycode.
To show International Domain Names in Unicode, set the "network.IDN_show_punycode" preference to false.

Several security fixes.

Security fixes don't seem to be listed yet though...

Btw, does this still have the same restrictive EULA as 1.0 does? I'm still using 1.0RC2, because I feel strongly that adopting a commercial-style (aka. adhesion contract) EULA, for an open-source project, is just wrong.

They're playing it safe. I've personally always installed over previous versions, and never had trouble. Haven't you noticed that a lot of applications suggest uninstalling the old version first?

I usually uninstall stuff first, but not Firefox because the only times I have uninstalled it's been a pain in the ass!

Although some of the nightly releases borked my system so that I'd have to uninstall all things firefox and reinstall - never lost my profile, but still - pain in the ass~

Hrmm... I never really noticed. But I think it's because they streamline it into the install.

I installed over the old version at home and it seems to work fine. But why does it not overwrite the existing entry in Add/Remove Programs? It's an annoying installer bug.

I hate how my add/remove has every single version of FF listed... no other app I've used does that even on overwrites.

You do an uninstall of any of those and it gets rid of your current version (of course).
Gotta manually remove reg entries...

I guess I don't understand the point of overwriting the old version rather than removing it. I just uninstalled the previoius version via "Add/Remove Programs" prior to installing the 1.0.1. All my extensions, themes, plugins and about:config settings were carried over, since they reside in the separate profile directory. And the old version is removed from the "Add/Remove Programs" list this way.

You cannot trust programs to retain your config files after an uninstall... hence people don't always trust/do the uninstall first. And it is not a custom to do so... many programs tell you it isn't even necessary. Unfortunately, there is no standard. If you have doubts about settings, you install over top of the existing.

They're not doing the standard (at least the add/remove programs part) like everyone else... if they had done that right, at least they can have it attempt to remove only that version (what would be the point of specifying the version / making a different entry for each version then).

Technically that's true because 1.0.1 is a new release, not an update for 1.0. But yeah, it's stupid.
