Yes, I am the Maxthon/MyIE2 fanboi. Or was. Firefox is quite good, but I have a bone to pick with it... and hopefully you guys can give me the extensions.

1. FIREFOX keeps CRASHING. Like either it's some Java DLL or firefox.exe itself, but it probably crashes every 5-10 minutes or so. VERY ANNOYING. if this was gone, that would convince me to go over. The dll is JS3250.dll or something along those lines.

2. When I close Firefox (or when it crashes) I want it to remember the last tabs I had open. Ex: If I "close" FF by the "X", then when I start up FF it should only have one instance, and should have all the tabs that I had before I "X"ed it. How?

3. I want F2 to go to the previous tab, F3 to go to the next tab. How?

4. How can I make links to different sites open in one instance in Firefox, and in the background tab at that?

Thanks!

Simon

1. Install 1.0PR, or atleast 0.9.3. 0.1 is kinda old.
2. Check for an extension. I remember there being one that does that.
3. Maybe one of the tab extensions.
4. Middle click?

How come when you press "Contol N" it opens a new window but not the same exact page like IE?

Because that's how they programmed it. IIRC, there is a possibility the Mozilla programmers will adopt atleast an option to minic IE that way, but I don't know much more than that.

Glad you like it.

I'm not familiar with that issue, that doesn't sound normal. I haven't yet upgraded to 0.10 yet, still running 0.9.1 + shellblock myself. I have stable browser uptimes on the order of weeks.

Look for the Session Saver extension. It will keep your tabs in the event of an unexpected browser crash too. I can't browse without it.

Not sure how to go about doing that, there are a number of tab-enhancement extensions, there's probably a way to assign hotkeys to them.

Check out all-in-one gestures, or TBE, tab browser extensions. Note that TBE has some compatibility issues with other extensions at times.

Single-window mode extension?

PS. n0c, Firefox 0.10 *is* 1.0PR, internally the version is 0.10, which is more than 0.9. :)

There is an extension that mimics that functionality of IE, but I don't recall the name of it. That was one feature that I always hated about IE, so I never installed it. :)

Hah. I think its pretty confusing to make 0.10 come after 0.9 - it confused the heck out of me when I was using apache 1.3.4 and the latest was 1.3.2x.

simms - Sun Java sucks, and a HUGE number of Mozilla crashes are directly caused by Sun's incompetence when it comes to writing JVMs. You should still try updating it to the latest version of Java.

There is no way to do the tab switches with other keys without an extension. The source code has hardcoded key values for that part.

I've already tried downloading an installing Java Launcher 1.4.2_5. I get an error in js3250.dll, or sometimes in Firefox.exe when I run .93. In 1.0, I don't think I get the FF.exe errors, but the js3250.dll errors still are rampant.

I hate Sun. Regardless, maybe a reinstall of the whole thing will do it?

Another thing - when I uninstall reinstall between 1.0 and .93, all my extensions are still working and there.. is that right?

Many extensions work. Some don't. If all of yours do, be happy ;).

Session Saver extension? Woohoo, i'm going to look for that. I also use opera, and one of the main reasons I use it a little more than firefox, is that it has the ability to save sessions, which I absolutely love. [edit: Nice, I just installed session saver, beautiful ! =) ]

BTW, I too have a slight problem with firefox I was hoping some of you may have the solution to. When I try to install extensions from a website, it gives me a message saying that it has blocked the site from installing extensions. Thats good, But the problem is, when I click 'edit options' and add that website to the 'allow' list, it STILL doesn't work. Any ideas? THanks,

Done. Crashes less, but still does it. What version of FF would you recommend is most stable..? I used 1.0PR, then went back to .93... but when FF crashes, the version number is .9... so this is all really confusing.

I need an exntesion that can make F2 go a tab backward and F3 go forward. Where is such an extension..

Apparently the 1.4.x JREs are horribly buggy with Firefox. This is meant to be fixed in the 1.5.x betas.

simms, I'm too lazy to write an actual extension (there's a fair amount of worked involved in packaging up the changes to an installable extension), but here's how you can get what you want:

Hard way:
navigate to <firefox install location>\chrome
rename toolkit.jar to toolkit.zip
find tabbox.xml in the zip file
extract it
look for "VK_TAB", and you should see what changes I made in the attached code to add the functionality
save, replace the tabbox.xml in the zip with the edited one
rename toolkit.zip to toolkit.jar

Easy way:
Get http://ctho.ath.cx/tmp/moz/toolkit.jar
Replace your toolkit.jar with this one.

Awesome. Thanks a lot. Now I'll try it out at home. Now only if I can stop the crashes, I think everything would be set... :)

And I wish 1.0PR was less buggy...

Wow, you checked this thread pretty fast. Unfortuantely, I can't, but I will definetely have to make it crash. I think it happens right between loading pages - that is, if I just view one page and stay at the page, it won't crash. I have always seen it crash when navigating from one page to another, or closing a window, or opening several tabs in the background.

After it crashes, when I try to load FF again, it will crash again even before a browser opens. When I open FF AGAIN after that, it opens.

if it's crashing that often, i would ..

uninstall FF, delete profiles, clean the registry
redownload and reinstall.
