i liked it, but i have some reservations about it. what's with the old school looking weapons? it just sticks out too much. revolvers and spaceships just don't mesh that well

I only know it because it took away Dark Angel (which, yes, it sucked 2nd and final season)... I watched the pilot of Firefly and did NOT care about the storyline.

I read an essay somewhere about the idea that it's because it's what works. A revolver is a simple, reliable weapon, almost guaranteed not to fvck up when you need it. The fancier things get, the more problems they can have. So, while they do have automatic weapons, revolvers will still stick around. Hell, screws have been around for forever for one reason - they work very well.

Also, if you listen to the guns when they're fired in the show, it doesn't sound like they're actual bullets. There's definitely something more advanced in there.

yeah, it sounds like they are firing some energy bullets or something. anyway, i thought the concept of the show was nice. it's like a special story about the millenium falcon

Joss Whedon never impressed me. I mean, Angel, Buffy, even Roseanne (the crappier episodes). The few movies he's worked on were also not the best, with the exception of Toy Story, but he wasn't the only write on staff there.

I could be wrong on that one...I heard it somewhere, but I was out of the country when it ran its course, so I never saw it when it originally showed.

USA Network showed the premier/pilot episode, the entire run was on Sci-Fi after that. The premier was the same night as some show about dead people, which bombed horribly.

Along with what Hubris said, the commentary for an old daily of Schlock Mercenary explained it pretty well.

The basic idea was that energy weapons tend to go through anything that doesn't have shields with equal or better power, including the hull of your ship. Projectile weapons, even charged ones like Firefly's appear to be, will go through your enemies just fine but not bother your hull.

rented the series. it was average at best. sorta cheesy. its not original... remember cowboy bebop? and that had more style to boot. this was sorta more.. xena/buffy-ish. i can see why they canceled it(yesi know they sabotaged it) only eps i kinda liked were the ones where his "wife" f*cks em over. she was hawt🙂

stuff like battlestar gallactica muchb etter.

I did end up enjoying it and I would love to see more but one thing I can't quite accept is the "Farscape meets Deadwood" feel of the show. I found that I much preferred "shippy" episodes where they stayed in space and away from the horse drawn carriages.

well it might have worked better if it were really more gritty dirty, explitive ridden deadwood like instead of the shucks aww golly kinda old west feel. but i guess they can't on network.

just go rent cowboy bebop instead.

I'm through the pilot and the first two eps...

so far the Reavers are what's really interesting.
The alliance is very "peacekeeper"-like, Making the Farscape\Deadwood analogy stick out.

I think they could have done a better job with making worlds "Frontier-like" without making them so Gunsmoke-ish.
The attempt at "old-western" dialect delivered in modern dialect tones is kind of distracting too.

That being said this last Reavers episdoe was pretty entertaining. I think I'll fall into the group of viewers who preferred the space episodes.

The episodes I watched were neither interesting nor captivating. I can say this because quite frankly i dont remember anything about the episodes. I'm also no a fan of the anachronistic setting of the places they inhabit. Also the characters aren't very interesting and pretty cliche to all sci-fi stories.
