I think this is quite the opposite from the short bit that I saw from the DVD. The creator is more into the character development, but fox was looking for more of an action packet hollywood-esque setup. This is why the first episode was not aired first and why the train robbery episode was created, to appease fox. I'm really suprised to see that he is credited with writing for the movie. The dialogue doesn't seem like it was written by the same person at all. He must have went another direction, or maybe his heart wasn't in it for the movie, knowing that the series would be no more by that point.

Right. Whedon wanted to do more character development than just pure action, which was evidenced perfectly between Serenity and The Train Job. Joss wanted to have the longer pilot episode with the character development but Fox made him write The Train Job instead since they wanted the action. To my knowledge, Joss always wanted to do the character development but he wanted the characters to be different than they were in the film; Mal being a darker character, for instance, but Fox wanted him to be funnier, so they made him funnier, etc.

I just looked back at my post and I don't know if it caused confusion, but I said that Fox wanted Mal to be colder. That kind of should have said Joss :)

At any rate, I don't think I'd say that Joss' heart wasn't in it for the movie. Firefly is his baby. I would attribute the difference in dialogue and flow and whatnot more to the fact that he was essentially cramming several seasons' worth of material into 2 hours. I've read or heard an interview somewhere where he pretty much said that.

I really wish I had more time to sit and discuss because I just love both the show and the movie, but unfortunately, I'm at work and no longer on my lunch :(
