Browncoats rejoice: Firefly is returning to basic cable — and Nathan Fillion has something to say about it.

The Science Channel has acquired the rights to the cult-hit and will air the series in its short-lived entirety, plus some new extras. Science Channel will wrap each episode with interstitial segments starring renowned physicist Dr. Michio Kaku, who will discuss the theoretical science behind the show’s sci-fi concepts.

According to Firefly studio 20th Century Fox, this will mark the first time Firefly has aired on a fully distributed basic cable channel since 2008, when it ran on USA Network.

In honor of this occasion, star Nathan Fillion took a brief break from shooting ABC’s Castle today to jump on the phone and answer five Firefly questions — including whether he’d ever reprise the role of Captain Mal again. That interview and more details about Science Channel’s Firefly plans below

hooray science fiction fans!

i had one question and it was answered in the linked article:

Following that, Firefly episodes will air every Sunday — and, yes, in their original intended order and upgraded to high definition.

will it be aired in the wrong order and the time slot moved around too? Just for nostalgia sake.

And the 5 questions

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: What was the part about playing the character?
NATHAN FILLION: It was my favorite job ever. What wasn’t great about it? I got to wear a low-slung holster. I got to ride horses. I got to have a spaceship. I got to act mean and curmudgeonly. [Creator Joss Whedon] is really good at kicking characters in the nuts so the other characters would have laughs at my expense and that was great too.

If Castle had its series finale tomorrow and Fox said to you and Joss: “We screwed up, let’s try doing Firefly again.” Would you do it?
Yes. Yes. I would examine very closely Fox’s reasoning — I’m a little gun-shy. If I got $300 million from the California Lottery, the first thing I would do is buy the rights to Firefly, make it own my own, and distribute it on the Internet.

What’s the most common thing Firefly fans say to you?
No. 1, “Is there going to be more?” No. 2, “Why was it canceled?”

Why do you think the show has had such an enduring appeal?
It’s a great question. We’re the most story-literate society the world has ever seen. What Joss tends to do is twist story conventions into reality. Whereas the story goes like this, real life goes like this, and that’s what Joss has mastered.

Do you ever watch the show nowadays or is that just weird?
It’s not weird. I haven’t watched it in a long, long time and I would like to revisit it.

Firefly premieres on Science Channel on March 6 at 8 p.m., with the two hour pilot, followed by the first episode at 10 p.m. Following that, Firefly episodes will air every Sunday — and, yes, in their original intended order and upgraded to high definition.

I think the ending of the Serenity movie pretty much killed off the possibility of more episodes.

Never, it was all an alcohol induced dream, surely they can undo it!

My buddy texted me to tell me they were bringing the show back and I got all excited. Then he realized they were just showing the reruns and I was sad...

This. They could just pickup where the TV series left off and ignore the movie completely. I'd be fine with that.

I'd be fine with that too. I didn't particularly like the Serenity movie. It had a different flavor from the TV show.

Here's the thing, if they screw up the new content, there is nobody out there this side of a brick wall in intelligence that would think that somehow the two were completely linked.

As for the movie? Meh. It had some moments, but it tried to introduce a bunch of people into a series that was around for a few "years" and wrap it all up in under 2 hours. It was generally not a format that fit well with a movie anyway. Most of their jobs were simple transit and the sub-plots carried throughout the series.

There were some episodes that were better than others, certainly.

I hope they do come back and re-do it. The problem being that they would not have the freedom you wuold get on an HBO series like Deadwood....

I hope USA would get their hands on it and allow a bit of creative freedom to make a series that would end up (hopefully) as good as Breaking Bad.

BTW, that series also reminded me a lot of Cowboy Bebop (anime). Same kind of lost feeling, a bunch of people that were not in their original roles trying to eek out a living as cargo/odd job contractors. They have their differences, but if you like one, I suggest you see the other.

The only thing I can say about this (other than Squee! Firefly in HD!) is, how silly is it that we now have to turn to the Science channel(!) to get decent science fiction programming but the the "science fiction" channel shows reality tv?

The Bluray of Firefly has been out for some time now.
As far as making new content between the end of the show and the movie, there is only a 6 month window there ( in verse continuity).
I'd rather pick up where the show left off and leave Serenity out of the equation.
I want to know what Sheppard Book's secrets were.
Though Jewel Staite is going to have to put some pounds on. She was fine as h3ll in Firefly. Not so much when she lost weight and was on Atlantis.

Now think real hard. You been bird-doggin' this township awhile now. They wouldn't mind a corpse of you. Now, you can luxuriate in a nice jail cell, but if your hand touches metal, I swear by my pretty floral bonnet, I will end you.

It came on some other cable channel a couple months back. Ovation TV I believe.

Nice to see others syndicating it, though. Great series. :)

Yeah, I've been contemplating picking it up, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

EDIT:
They've been talking about doing Book's story for awhile. At first as a series then in a movie. I think they've settled on doing it as a comic with Dark Horse.
