Glock man here. I have 2 of them, Model 22 and Model 27, both .40 cal. 27 is great for concealed carry. I also own a S&W .357. Great gun also.

I have a S&W Model 64 .357 - Stainless 4" heavy barrel; I gave it a light abrasive blast finish with polished cylinder flutes, latch button, trigger, hammer, and screw heads. Added a Wolff kit, and Pachmeyer grips. I get 6 rounds in 2" @ 25 yards offhand (if I do my part).

TheOverlord:

I usually recommend something like a Ruger Mk II .22 cal semi-auto, in either the Government or Target models. You can usually find them used for under $175 if you shop around.

They're very accurate, never wear out, cheap to shoot alot, and serve to easily teach the fundamentals of safe firearms handling and target shooting. If you get one, you'll probably never get rid of it, even if you decide you enjoy shooting enough to aquire other guns.

As an alternative, I would second Hamburgerpimp's choice of a .38 cal revolver. The one I mentioned above cost me $125 and needed a set of grips and some "clean-up". Since I was 'smithing on a regular basis at the time, and had already done similar treatments to two previous guns, I just turned it into a personal project for myself.

<< I'm looking for a childrens .22 rifle to tech with, what did you get? >>

IMO, the best is a Ruger 10/22.

I bought her a Marlin Papoose .22 rifle.

It isn't a single shot, I almost didn't get it for that reason, but I think I like it better this way. She LOVES it, and is learning how to handle it responsibly... look at me now, I'm all proud of myself.

edit- If your kid is real small though this might be too big. My daughter is 9 and would do better with about 2 more inches on each arm.

I'm not going to inventory my weapons here, but I'll tell my faves in each catagory.

CC:
A Walther PPK/S with HydraShok .380(damn spelling).
I'm a relatively thin man. I can't conceal anything larger.

OC:
Sig 228 9mm, K-Kote Tritium night sights.

Home Defense:
Mossberg 590 12 gauge shotgun. 18 1/2" barrel, 9 round pump action with parkerized finish, heat shield and a "speed feed" stock that holds four extra rounds. I added a laser sight and a flash light to it. I also have a pistol grip stock for it, but I prefer the full stock.

In the army, I loved my M-16 so much, I got an AR-15 when I got out. That has to be my favorite plinking gun.

Edit: I almost forgot my twirling/quikdraw gun 🙂 I do love my Colt Peacemaker 😀

.whats a good handgun for a begginner shooter? something that has relatively light recoil and all?

The biggest consideration for a beginning shooter is to get a .22. The main reason is that ammo is so cheap you can practice - a lot. Any centerfire firearm will be expensive to shoot enough

Beginers need a .22 because there is no kick to it. It's very gentle and not scary. This way you don't scare the crap out of your kid, and it doesn't ware them out to practice.

Don't own any handguns.
Many rifles and shotguns for hunting though. My favorite is my Model 1974 Winchester .22l. Semi auto that holds 15 rounds in the stock. It was my grandfathers and I still use it all the time to go plinking.
