fire hazard?

I read somewhere ( and i think it's in all ignorance) that AMD CPU's are fire hazards? When you burn out a chip, all that happens is that you see some smoke, smell smoke... and that's it....

can anyone confirm or deny this claim?

Every part in the PC is a fire hazard if not handled properly dude. As long as you don't pour gasoline in it, it's fine. I would imagine the CPU to overheat till the point where the sockets melt but as long as no flameable(sp?) touches it, you're fine.

He prolly toasted too many AMD chips.

Not really I don't think...I burned up my good old Duron 1G--er, 800, and it didn't even look damaged (you just couldn't boot or reinstall the OS). It looked fine and the air around it was only barely warm using the coolermaster retail Duron HSF. It could be a fire hazard if it was left to burn for a long time, but even an Intel might do that (they _should_ shut off, but many mobos don't do it).
