FIRE and ITER

Maybe this should be in the politics forum, but I thought I'd try here first.

Fire was halted according to this Article, why would we do this? Why not continue to experiment?

Apparently there is much dispute over where ITER should be built. Germany, US, and Netherlands don't want it in France. I can understand why the US doesn't want it in France, but why are Germany and the Netherlands against it?

Also why are the only sites in France and Japan? Why not Italy, Germany, Switzerland, or some other country?

maybe ot? dosent seem all that technical to me, just thinking of were to build it? that would be p&n or ot, but if you were asking about its workings, its ht

Fire was cancelled because the government found the spending superflous with ITER going along with more backing, and becausae their aren't enough beaurocrats in favor of it. ITER can only be built in france most likely because they have the most open view towards nuclear power compared to the other European countries.

The reasons why Europe wants bo build ITER in France are both political and practical. Practical because several other Eurepan projects related to nuclear research are already based in that area and the "scientific infrastructure" is good. Political because France is probably willing to spend extra money on the project and other countries already have their "share" of international and European projects.

AFAIK the European part of the money will come from EU, not from individual countries, this is true for most of the basic research in Europe, most of the big research frameworks are funded by EU, not by the national goverments.
