Just got this home and it's wired throughout with Ethernet ports in the wall in each room/ floor.

The FiOS ONT is a closet where all the ethernet ports throughout the house originate from.

Because I don't really how to set this up for now I have it working as follows:

ONT > ethernet cable to the Ethernet port for the living room > ethernet cable > Apple Airport Extreme 6th Gen set up as an AP.

I tried putting a Netgear between the ONT and the ethernet ports board to "split" the connection coming from the ONT between the living room and office but it didn't work.

My goal is to set everything up so that each ethernet port in the house has internet connectivity.

Note: I don't use TV or regular phone service. This is for Internet only and I have my FiOS account and ONT set up to serve internet over the Ethernet cable coming out of the ONT.

Might be wrong, but don't you need your NAT/DHCP router BEFORE you split the connection off?

Put your airport extreme (or another router) right after the ONT, and then split THAT connection and it should work, make sure you disable DHCP on any subsequent routers, you want their IP's to be assigned by the "parent" router at the top of the chain closest to the ONT.

Check DSLReport Verizon FiOS subforum as well. They have good information on this type of stuff.

I didn't try that: I think you are right but I didn't want to place the Airport Extreme by the ONT because it is on the top floor. I prefer keeping it on the second floor thinking being between the 1st and 3rd floor would be better for wireless performance.

It sounds like I have to get a second Airport Extreme now to just leave it by the ONT.

I dont think it necessarily needs to be the airport extreme, just a router to start the chain. Better quality routers however can provide better speeds to a network.

Right and while the AE is highly regarded (love mine), apparently Apple has given up on that business and now there are better routers/ APs avail. I haven't taken the time to look into them.

Yeah, there are several options out there.

I was looking at the Ubiquiti UAP-AC-HD, because it's one of the few routers under $300 that can deliver over 900mbps over the air with packet shaping and other more advanced features.

However, unless you have gigabit internet (which FiOS offers, I have it), or are doing many large local file transfers between your wireless devices, then spending a lot on an expensive router/access point wouldn't make too much sense for you.

So really depends what you're looking for out of your network.

Thank you so much for posting that. Had never heard of it!

And it turns out the CEO is an ex Apple employee working on the Airport:

Edit: wait, that's a different company. No idea how I ended up on there when I actually started ont he web site product page for the router you named!

They're actually the same company! Ubiquiti is the parent company, Amplifi is their wifi mesh network product.
