Anyone with FIOS want to tell me what I'm missing out on?

We have comcast and they want like 15 bucks a month extra for HD service, which is 100% free with cablevision.

One other nitpick is that the History channel cannot be viewed without a box.. wtf.

Anyway, so my friend got fios after years of me checking repeatedly only to be dissapointed. He lives right up the freakin street and his address shows up as available, mine does not. :frown::confused::thumbsdown:

Is there anyway to get streaming HD baseball and football? We don't watch any tv except sports, news and netflix.. I'd rather give a few hundred bucks to MLB/NFL and Netflix rather than like 700 a year for crappy television.

So do it. Or call Verizon *(I'm assuming that's who the provider is) and ask when it will be available.

We are stuck on a crappy 1meg down DSL and DirecTV. The guy down the road has Charter and is paying about 1/2 of what we are. Plus his internet is 6x faster than ours.

Obviously what is needed is two high-gain directional antennas (mounted on your roofs), amplifiers (if necessary) and a couple of 802.11n routers set in bridge mode.

Then have him increase his subscription to the highest internet speed possible and offer to pay the difference.

I seem to remember a plan with at least 50mbit down. Not sure what the upload was but it was in the double-digit mbits.

I have FiOS at home (LI, NY) and it's pretty awesome. My parents don't have an HDTV, so I can't comment on the HD, but everything else is awesome (20/5 internet :)).

I'm unfortunately stuck with shitty-ass Comcrap in my apartment in Chicago. The service is supposed to be 6/1.5, but a lot of times, it falls below 1/1 and the TV service will just randomly block up for a second or two about every half hour or so. The only redeeming quality of Comcast is their free ondemand tv shows.

20/20 speeds with FIOS here. the gf does high-end retouching so she sends and receives large image files to her clients and needs the 20 upload.

unfortunately now they made some HD channels part of an 'extreme' HD package. however, the basics of what I watch are still part of the ordinary plan:

NFL Network HD, Discovery HD, Food HD, History HD, TLC HD, Travel Channel HD, Animal Planet HD, Bravo HD, ESPN HD

Most football games are on network TV. If your TV has a QAM tuner (I think most more recent TVs do have QAM tuners; not as much in less expensive older TVs) you can get the networks in HD for free from Comcast. No box needed, no HD service needed. ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, PBS. Not sure if CW is in HD, I never watch it.

Yeah... I found out about this and went to Circuit City and bought a hauppage 950 QAM hybrid tuner to give it a try on my PC.

Picked up like 40 QAM channels, could only actually view some religious crap (QAM 17 or something), all other channels were black (encrypted I assume). Picked up nothing with the antenna. Returned promptly...

Neighboring town on LIL had FIOS nearly 2 years before we did - each town had to have approval (whereas a place like NJ required 1 approval for the entire state) and they went to court. We're finally lit last year. And part of this town got lit up many months before... it can get frustrating.

As for packages... they only added the NHL and supposedly MLB packages this past October (great timing for baseball wasn't it?). I am unsure about NFL.

15 megaBITS per second is your rated speed, and i think you are mistaking it for a megaBYTE. there are 8 bits in a byte. downloading at 1.5MB a second is downloading 1.5 megaBYTES per second - that is 12 megabits per second, close to your rated limit.

i dunno. i have donloawded stuff at over 2MB a second with 20megabits down. that is my full bandwidth being used essentially.

right now i am reinstalling IE7, from microsoft it was coming at over 2MB a second. find another place to download from :)
