I swear.. the commercials keep getting louder and louder..

I was watching the Simpsons tonight.. volume on tv at 14 (usually have it on 12-14 during normal watching).. Then the commercials come on.. and it sounds like I have my TV on the loudest possible.. It's disgusting.. Congress needs to get involved.

FIOS sucks for loud commercials.

fuck off. you get no sympathy from me, because you have fios available to you.

Congress passed a bill to stop that, but it hasn't gone into effect just yet. I think its 2010 before they have to comply.

looks like it starts anytime now.
Some members of Congress want broadcasters to turn down the volume on television commercials.

A bill sponsored by U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo (D., Calif.) would require the U.S. Federal Communications Commission to "preclude commercials from being broadcast at louder volumes than the program material they accompany."

Broadcasters say they are addressing the problem already. "The major television broadcast networks, including ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox, are each, individually, implementing policies that attempt to control loud commercials," said David Donovan, president of the Association for Maximum Service Television, a broadcast industry trade group, speaking at a hearing Thursday before the House Energy and Commerce Telecommunications Subcommittee.

Mr. Donovan said Rep. Eshoo's bill could slow TV stations' voluntary efforts to control commercial volumes because any FCC proceeding would generate debate and uncertainty.

"I can assure you that the industry is motivated to act," said NBC Universal Principal Engineer and Audio Architect Jim Starzynksi, also at the hearing. Final review of an industry standard on commercial volume is expected in July, and broadcasters could begin implementing it by fall, he said.

Some stations were even charging advertisers for the 'service' . They have a broadcast standard limit and the commercials cannot exceed that limit anymore than progamming can, but they can process the commercials to make them as close to the limit as possible. You can do it with any sound editing program, just normalize for 0db.

DVR/Mute button/Letters to the TV station responsible.

I'd normally say, "Congress has better things to do than regulate the volume of TV content," but I know from evidence that they would sooner ignore important concerns and piss away time on more trivial matters, like declaring a National Day of Mourning for Billy Mays, or dealing with sports players' abuse of steroids.
(Ok, ok, so one of those didn't really happen.....though I'd rather see Billy Mays Day instead.)

And it's not just FIOS. I'm on Time Warner and certain channel send me dashing for the remote when commercials come on. Glad someone is finally doing something about it.

That stupid fuck that used to advertise Oxiclean or whatever the hell it was dead because millions of people day and night every time one of his commercials played sent him vibrations of hate and contempt. The worthless swine who made others suffer for his gain didn't know thoughts can kill.

Did you mean Fido den coma as in having to sleep in the dog house?

Was it Monty Python that did a skit where they gradually lowered the volume for several minutes so people would turn their TVs way up, then they cranked it? Or maybe the network nixed it. Either way, that would be some funny stuff. Almost as good as people throwing shoes at their TV during those bug commercials.

THIS!

The FCC's job is to regulate wireless signals for the public good. Loud commercials are not in the public's best interest. So the FCC should do something about it. On fiber and cable however, the FCC really shouldn't have a say, EXCEPT that federal money went into building these networks, so they should have a say.

the best part of it is when the broadcasters say it's not needed cause they've "fixed" this problem.

i switched to directTV 2 months ago from DishNetwork, i never noticed loud commercials on Dish but with Direct its really freaking annoying. like yesterday for example i was watching the braves play on TBS and fell asleep, then a loud ass commercial comes on and i nearly fall off the couch. :|

There are a number of commercials that do this. One is the friggin Bose Radio. The Enzyte commercial does it too.
Fuckers.

I am sure he means Videodrome.

Are you talking about loud commercials that are FOR FIOS or loud commercials for other things while watching FIOS? I can assure you that Dish Network has many, many outrageously loud commercials. Especially on HGTV and Food Network.

On a related note: Modern action movies are the same way. I find myself having to turn up the tv in order for the dialogue to be loud enough to hear, and then turn it back down again when the explosions come on. It's fucking ridiculous.

That's why I started watching with subtitles. Changing volume all the time gets old real fast.

I just got FIOS last week and have noticed this as well. The programming is at a lower volume than what it was on basic cable (i.e. my volume was never past 30 before, and now I have to keep it on 40 to hear things). Then the commercials come on and it kills my ears, thus forcing me to put the volume down.

It's called dynamic range, and in music and movies it's a good thing. Watch this video here to see what's happend to music over the past couple decades:

The Loudness War

That said, I understand that there are times when the extreme difference in volume can be distracting. If you are watching a movie late at night, you don't want to wake up anyone else in the house. Most TVs and receivers have a compression mode you can enable that will do essentially what is being shown in the youtube video I linked above.
