So the apt i rented in europe has a built in sauna. I spend 20-25 minutes /day in it @ 95-105c and then hop into a cold shower at 20c-ish. its freakin awesome. i am moving back to florida soon and would love to install a similar contraption in my florida room. Will the ambient humidity there make this a no-go?

hrm! a few kilobucks i'm thinking, although i wont mess with the more traditional fire burning type. i just want an electric heating element, some rocks and some wood benches and walls.

You headed in the wrong direction. Shoulda come to Thunder Bay, ON which has had a long history of Finnish influence stemming from immigrants early in the 20th century. One result is that there are several companies here who make and sell pre-fab saunas with various sizes and heating options (plus many diverse accessories), because there is a significant market in the area. Don't know how much it would be to have one delivered to FL. Or, much cheaper, whether someone sells DIY plans - try Google, or maybe limit yourself to google.ca . If you find, you probably could find an electric heater system to buy rather than re-inventing one.

Reluctantly, I have to admit you'll probably find sauna sellers in the north central USA, like Wisconsin and Minnesota, where Finnish immigration also happened.
