Finlandia >= Gray Goose?

Friend of mine told me they thought Finlandia Vodka was as good as Gray Goose, or better. He puts it in the freezer till it turns thick (richer tasting, smoother, 'thick to the taste', not physically thick). It's cheaper that's for sure but is it almost as good in your opinion? Curious cause I'd like to pick up a bottle of Vodka soon and would like to get something better than the Smirnoff I bought last time. I'd like to drink it straight neat (NOT mixed) with anything.

Edit: Ended up getting a bottle of Iceberg Vodka (a Canadian brand) on the recommendation of one of the guys at the liquor store. I'm about to see if it's any good. :)

Edit2: Hmm not too bad. The Iceberg is definitely smoother and better tasting than the Smirnoff I bought before. Definitely something I don't mind drinking neat, though I can imagine even better than this.

I don't think Vodka should become thick from the freezer. At least not as thick as I'm assuming from your post.

What do you expect it to do, get thinner? :p

Any alcohol will become more viscous in the freezer.

I wouldn't call any 80 proof or higher alcohol after being in the freezer "thick".

It's more of an expression than anything. I mean thicker to the taste, and a little more viscous, of course it's not going to get really thick in real life.

Definitely. Give a bottle a swirl at room temperature. Not how the liquid behaves. Now put it in the freezer overnight. Give it a swirl the next day. It's not 'thick', but it definitely isn't as 'thin' as it would be at room temperature.. there is a noticeable visual difference in viscosity. Not saying it's going to be anything that would change the pour rate or anything of that idea... but it's different. (in regards to 80 proof vodka)

Can't say I really like any Vodka all that much, but the one I like best is unflavored Stolichnaya.

Just thought of something to add to the "things that are overrated" thread.

Lot of people seem to like the Kirkland Vodka from Costco. It's made in France like GG.

Liquor is only sold in Government Liquor stores and licensed beer and wine stores here in Canada. Won't be seeing any Costco Vodka here, the very idea sounds icky ;)

I'm not a huge vodka drinker, but when I do drink it I like Kettle One the best. Next is Gray Goose. Not sure if I ever tried Finlanda, though.

I got that once. The bottle is too tall. Makes it hard to fit in the freezer. I've gotta jam it in diagonally, with a precarious arrangement of frozen items around it. It could be the best vodka in the world and I still ain't gonna buy it again. Rearranging a bunch of frozen food every time I make a drink, having concentrated orange juice land on my toe, losing track of a swordfish steak that falls out, skids under a cabinet, and then stinks up the joint? No thanks.

Gray Goose is overrated.
Vodka is supposed to be served ice-cold. Either out of the freezer or shaken over ice.
Just because vodka doesn't freeze solid at freezer temps does not mean that it doesn't become more viscous. Almost every liquid becomes more viscous as its temperature decreases.
I live in an ABC state so I've never seen this Costco vodka. If I drink vodka, I usually drink Smirnoff or Stoli. Usually though, I prefer whiskeys or rums. Or just a good microbrew.

Keep going, I don't think the horse is dead yet :p

Yes, I know liquid gets more viscous as it becomes colder. If he had said thicker or more viscous, then all would have been well. I still wouldn't refer to cold vodka as thick. Maple syrup is thick ;)

My top 3 in no order:
Grey Goose
Ketel One
Belvedere

Middle of the road (overrated imo):
Smirnoff
Stoli

My top cheap choice (for mixing):
Popov

Serious, I got Popov for $11 for a 1.75er and mixing it I cannot tell the difference. It seems a little more pure than the other cheap ones too b/c I get less hangovers.

So I guess ya, if I'm buying, I go for Popov, but if someone offers me something from the top shelf I go with one of those 3 depending on my mood.

I like Belvedere if I have to drink vodka, other than then I'd rather drink whiskey or any other hard liquor or beer, but mostly beer.

I can't stand vodka anyway these days. Too much drinking of the crap $10 handles and now I can't even enjoy any brand of the good stuff.

Now bourbon is a different story. Mmmmmm good.

And check out the link at the top of the forums for the announcements. There's a ton of new mods these days.

Finlandia routinely wins over grey goose in vodka tastings. Very high quality stuff. Grey goose uses grain neutral spirits in theirs - it's actually a low quality vodka that prices itself very high to appearp "premium".

The grapefruit finlandia and tonic is a GREAT cocktail. Very refreshing. If you want add a very small splash of grenedine to it.
