Russia's being very open about its information war against Finland. Russia is spreading fake news about Finland and unfortunately some of these end up published internationally. In December 2013 a new site was opened http://www.finnbay.com/

It claims to be publishing news in English and in Russian for foreigners living in Finland and for Russians in St Petersburg and Moscow. Millions of Russian tourists visit Finland every year and we do a lot of business together so it's probably aimed at those people. Most of the news seem ok but some concerning Finnish-Russian relations seem like propaganda. No one really knows who is behind this Finnbay news service but the Finnish ambassador in Russia called it a fake news site. Russian intelligence services are suspected. Also it's been called a tool in the information war where they include propaganda in between real news. The aim is to create confusion. Some international news agencies, like NBC and France24, have taken the propaganda bait and published news based on Finnbay as a source.

This propaganda piece is circulating online: http://www.finnbay.com/russia-foreign-cabinet-finland-hands-tight-to-cooperate-with-russia/
The Russian Cabinet Committee on Foreign and Security Policy confidently affirmed that Finland would continue to cooperate with Russia at all levels no matter what the European Union or the U.S. says.
This is a lie aimed at creating confusion in Finland and internationally about Finland's foreign policy position. Russians are getting dirtier every year in their power games.

Yah, it was Vladimir Put.. eh... Lenin himself who signed the Finnish declaration of independence.

Latvia and Lithuania got tired of Russian propaganda and banned Russian state television broadcasting in their countries. I don't agree with the decision but I can understand why they did it. Russia is spreading a lot of disinformation and propaganda to agitate Russian minorities in its neighbours. I'm too lazy to find an English source.

Heh. heard about this yesterday and meant to post it

Something that should have happened a long time ago, tbh. There is a story that my SO tells me, and while I forget the names, is a pretty good example of the type of separation that exists between these two communities within Latvia.

Apparently, within Latvia there is this super famous news personality (Latvian) that married a super famous singer/entertainer (Russian). Both grew up in Latvia, and both are very well known within their own ethnic communities--their respective fame being tied to their specific community.

However, these communities have been so divided--largely due to the invasion of Russian state media pumping propaganda for decades--that neither of these two people had ever heard of each other before they met...despite being so famous within the same country for so many years.

weird.

Attacking Finland is about as dumb as attacking Switzerland. Lots of excellent defensive territory, a well trained and maintained defensive army... You think war in Iraq or Afganistan is bad/expensive, those are nothing compared to what a battle with Finland would be like...
