Finished my pimp rig TiVo (DirecTiVo)... Weeeee....

I've had various Tivos since they first came out. While I've expanded their drives I've never done one like this, it's great!

Nudie (typo on the altering but I'm too lazy to fix it.)

* Dual 120GB seagate quiet drives: Any larger and I'd have to hack the kernel, so I digressed. 225 hours of directv lovin'

* Turbonet with tytool extraction- direct download of mpeg streams as needed. TiVoweb also installed for various control, ftp-shell, etc.

* 512mb cache card - accelerates interface, program guide, recorded shows. My previous TiVo setup was a pig, taking upward of 12 seconds to present the recorded shows because of the larger discs. Now it flies!

* Dual tuners. Stock on all directivos but the reason I put up with directv. Being able to watch one and record one or just record two is awesome!

Anyhoo any of you with TiVos out there I recommend these mods if you're handy- it wasn't easy but certainly worth it!🙂

What is Turbonet?
It's a directivo. Turbonet is the networking side of the cachecard
found here. It combines the cachecard and networking in one, then it's plugged right into the pci bus for pci bus speeds.

Nice, now I want to make one! How much did it all cost?

I never really added it up, let's see:

DirecTiVo: already had it, I guess you can get one for $150ish? Tivo service extra of course.
Drives: $70 each after rebates, provided they come.
Cachecard: $110 delivered.
Memory: $75

Ability to be a huge couch potato: Priceless. 😛

I see. So you have to have directv in order to do this to a tivo?

No, you can do it with a regular TiVo. You just won't have dual tuners.

Very cool

😎

I want a series 2 aircard🙁

Moose if you go the aircard route check this out. Ignore the picture, it's not the correct one- this has a cool external antenna that works really nice with all tivos. I've done two setups with it now. 🙂

Think I might go with DTivo. I have two ReplayTV's now, but cables $50 a month + installation and DTivos $45 a month and free installation and free DVR. Plus Tivo lowered the monthly rate if you have more than one tivo and replaytv isn't following suite).

DTivo monthly rate is $5/mo, has been for a while. It doesn't follow the same pricing structure as "stand-alone" tivos.

Are you sure you can add the dual tuner onto the reg. tivo? If that's the case, sweet, cause I have a directivo lying here.

What model is your tivo btw?

So does the cache card make the guide faster as well? I hate how it takes forever to scroll through whereas my old RCA receiver was very fast.

Does the OS have to be modded so that the network portion is operational? I gather from your post the only OS related things you had to do was to allow for the upgraded hds?

Yes, all of it is noticably faster.

My tivos run 2.5 xtreme just because it's a handy do-it-all .iso- I don't use the service hacks. The install goes:

1. Hook up drives on IDE2 Master & slave
2. Image xtreme on a drive
3. xtreme launches tivomad to expand to 2nd drive
4. boot in tivo, allow it to upgrade to 2.5.2
5. disconnect, install network drivers
6. reinstall to tivo, allow it to "call in" via ethernet
7. tivo downloads 3.0 software, installs, reboots
8. 3.0 fuxors ethernet drivers, disconnect and reinstall

Sounds complicated but it's pretty fast and easy.

I know I was just pointing out why I didn't want to stay with RTV anymore, I love it and its awesome, but If I can get a 2 tuner Tivo for sat for way cheaper than cable and 2 RTVs, I might have to go that route😀

Ah rats. I just noticed it doesn't work with Series 2 DirecTIVOs. Oh well......🙁

Dang, I'm interested too... if that cache card makes the guide, menus, etc... !!!

I've been meaning to add an additional HD to my Hughes DVR40 but I've been a little busy lately... sucks that there isnt a cache card for my DTivo yet...

Is that a series 1 or series 2 directivo?? I have a series 2 directivo that I've upgraded to 2x120GB for additional space, but I want to hook the thing up to my network to extract video streams (instead of having to extract them at "real time" by playing and outputting them).

<edit> D'oh.... it don't work on series 2 direct tv. Rats.....

Is there any way to extract data properly (over a network connection) on a series 2 directivo?
