Finished my GRE an hour ago...

Spoooon

Overall, I can live with the results. But I'm taking it again and practicing for it.

Verbal: 670
Quantitative: 670
Analytical: 620

I'm pretty disgusted with my performance on the quantitative and analytical portions. :disgust: But the scores are good enough to get into the places I was going to apply to. 😀

<< If your scores are good enough to get into the schools you care about (they are certainly decent), why are you taking the test again? >>

Exactly what I was wondering.

Once you get in I doubt they will ever look at the GRE scores again.

I just want to score really high on it. 😀 Besides, anything that can distract from my subpar performance early on in my undergrad career is a good thing. 😉

Fortunately, most of the places I've looked at look at your last 60 hours of undergrad performance. They do look at your earlier work but they seem to weigh your GPA toward the end of school a little bit more. But my grades were pretty bad for my second, third, and fourth semesters. I took some time off to get my crap together, then I went back. I've been getting an average of a 3.8 or so ever since.

do your schools also base fellowships/financial aid on your scores? is there a minimum threshhold, or is it very comp[etitive and they look at other things, too, in decising (i.e. what are the reject rates)?

those are what you should consider if you are thinking about retaking the test 🙂

those scores are pretty good! its seems you are well rounded. I got

Verbal:430
Quant:730
Analyt:770

when I took them two years ago... good thing I'm not majoring in English....

They do look at other things but the GRE is something that's relatively easy to do good on so there's no point settling for just a good score if I think I can get an excellent one. Despite them looking at other things, I don't see how the admissions people could simply forget that the applicant scored really high on the GRE. Besides, now that I have a decent score, I can begin working on making nice with my professors for my recommendations. 😉

Quant:730
Analyt:770

That's what I wanted to get on those two parts. Some of the questions on the analytical question suprised me on how time consuming they were. I don't know if you remember, but the questions that have like 3 groups and a list of people/things that can be arranged into those groups following special rules. Those got me pretty good. I wasted 30 out of 60 minutes answering 10 questions. After that, I revised my technique. I think with a couple practice tests I should do a lot better on it next time I take it.

yeah... getting a technique down is very helpful for the Analytical section. I did about a ba-zillion practice problems in the months before taking the test. Many of the problems can be attacked using the same process. I found the drawing out diagrams and grids of what you know and don't worked well for me. I also like puzzle questions like the ones on the Analytical section.... I guess i'm just weird.

I really enjoyed the GRE, and it was great practice for the LSAT (which is similar to the analytical portion of the GRE, but tougher). I got 780 analytical, 770 verbal, and around 700 math (amazing to me, since I failed out of algebra/trig in high school, the last math class I had taken, more than 5 years before taking the GRE).

Didn't I tell you a few days ago that you needed 3 practice tests? Now you see why. Drawings are definately needed. I took in 5 blank pages to do that section - and I filled nearly every dot of those pages with diagrams. Overall your scores are excellent and the GRE score doesn't really matter - as long as it meets the minimum requirements.

Man, I hated the GRE. I'm not sure how it works now, but when I took it in '95, they had 2-3 "test" sections. These were used to test questions they wanted to use in the future. Well, I suddenly had to take a ferocious piss near the beginning of one of the verbal sections. I tried to hold it in until we had a break, but there was absolutely no way for me to concentrate. So, I took a couple seconds and randomly marked in the circles for that section and took off to the bathroom.

Afterwards, I was >hoping< the section I messed up on was one of those test sections. But, when the results came a couple weeks/months (can't remember) later, it was sorta obvious that section was graded... 500!!! Luckily, I was still able to get into the grad program at school. It's sort of sad when your GRE score isn't >that< much better than your SAT score. 🙂

Yeah, yeah. 😛

At the end of the test, I did a practice essay question for when they change the format in October. Take the test NOW. Heh, the essay question wasn't that hard, but it wasn't easy. When I was finished, I wasn't very satisfied with it and I was almost out of time.
