...The final exam, that is, which covered trilobites, graptolites, brachiopods, corals & echinoderms. ;)

This final will count for 50% or 60% of the final grade (the students had to decide just before seeing the questions), with the labs worth 25% and the midterm worth either 25% or 15%. I haven't compiled the final marks yet. Will do this tomorrow in school. Haven't calculated the average on the final either but methinks I made it just a tad too easy (normally the average on my final is 77%, almost every year). ;) Here are the results of my 2001 bunch of aspiring palaeontologists...

Here in America, we call 'dem failures.

Maybe you should make a reverse curve where everyone falls on their ass and anyone under 90 gets a 0, anyone above gets a 100. :)

I always thought 70 should be a good average for a final. You might be a little easy.
Of course, I took a micro-econ class where fully 25% of the class failed and the final average was 60%.

The average on my midterm was 69%. It generally hovers around 70-71%. They assume that the course is easy and the midterm is an unpleasant surprise to most. They tend to do better on the final because they study more and know what to expect.

Either the exams were too easy or you're one hell of a teacher ;)
I am having three courses this year, but to save money my department have cut down the teaching time with 20-30% :Q. I expect a massive rise in the failure rate, but it is really out of my hands :( :|

I thought all your tests are multiple choice? Not to sound snotty or anything but isn't it alot harder to fail a multiple choice test?

no its much harder to fail an essay test - you can always B.S. your way thru an essay.
