Yeah, I think the #1 thing that makes New Vegas better is that there's just more variety. More weapons, many weapons have mods, tons of crafting recipes to make food, medicine, repair kits, and ammo. Speaking of ammo, there are a lot of different ammo types as well, so you can get armor piercing ammo or hollow points that are effective against different enemies. The perks are more interesting whereas FO3's perks were mostly just "+5 to two skills." The main quest has four different outcomes, and there are far more side quests than in FO3. Despite having a smaller world map, New Vegas has more environments and variety.

AND isn't just the same bleak ugly cookie-cutter-browns for every damn texture in the game.

Oh, and you weren't forced to use VATS in FO3. You COULD just click and fire. I played the whole game that way. It was really easy to get headshots and disable limbs and stuff.

People who bitch about the shooting/vats/ironsites in FO3 are just whining about something irrelevant.

😉

Try not using VATS then. The problem is that the gunplay is pretty bad so it's difficult (in a frustrating way) to do that. Although I've been rolling Project Nevada and using bullet time entirely instead of VATS and it works pretty well.
I almost never use VATS in New Vegas and I've never had a problem. Unlike New Vegas, though, I used it almost exclusively in FO3.

I find the guns/ironsights aspect in NV works well UNLESS the person you are trying to shoot is right near a piece of cover or you are near hard cover. I find alot of the time when i see a head or arm sticking out from a hard crate/table/door/chair etc that i shoot it and it hits an invisiable wall, they REALLY need to work on the hit detection. Also when shooting someone who is down in a gully/ravine and they are just clearing the top of it i find shooting the head as it appears will sometimes result in hitting the ground even when the targets head is clearly 1-2 feet above the ground level.

This game is obviously not designed to not use VATS. Glitches like i described would never make it into any decent modern day FPS, i think thats why they added VATS, easier than designing a real FPS hit detection system.

Yeah, I've noticed this too. I also find it's more accurate to disable "true iron sights" in New Vegas. There are several weapons with really awful irons, specifically the caravan shotgun which puts a big bolt right in front of whatever you're trying to aim at. Shotguns in general suck with iron sights on. And a lot of people don't like the peep sights you get with the Cowboy Repeater, Brush Gun, and This Machine. Some weapons also have misaligned sights.

Project Nevada adds a dynamic crosshair similar to what you see in Counter-Strike and other shooters. It accurately reflects the spread of your current gun, even taking into account slugs vs. buckshot with a shotgun.

Desperately trying to PLAY this game... but it seems to prefer crashing on me more than anything else.

amazingly FO 3 never crashes on me even though it does for everyone else but NV crashes on me at least once per 30 min.

For me, New Vegas seems to crash most often when changing from one area to another. Seems to happen about once an hour. In fact, I can't remember the crash NOT in a load screen (as opposed to just walking around somewhere). I always quicksave immediately before fast traveling. Using CASM (auto save manager) is a lifesaver as well, never lose more than 5 minutes of progress.

Also decided to give Fallout 3 with FWE another shot, this time changing a few of the settings to make it less tedious (FWE adds a lot of new things, but most of them can be disabled or changed to your liking). The game was stable for a while but recently started crashing a lot. It's always at roughly the same point though so maybe it's just a fluke. Didn't have time to try to fix it yet.
