Hella fun game :-D

Runs pretty smooth @ 24 AA 1080P max settings.

I'm on my second play through and have 4 companions this time :) (shorty, red, sticky and charon )

Ya... nice to see someone else likes companions :)

btw Are you using Remote control Companions mod? It makes controlling them a lot easier.

All the textures in that game are the same boring gross brown/gray/rust. I mean everything. New Vegas takes care of that nicely.

Yeah, both FO3 and NV are great games.
I thought about playing FO3 again and that might just convince me. Thanks!

whats the big difference?

I played the original FO:3 and was terribly unimpressed. What does NV improve on the original?

Much better writing for the main quest and sidequest. (Obsidian = Planescape: Torment, Neverwinter 2, KOTOR 2 . . . we'll just pretend Dungeon Siege 3 never happened.)

Shooting with iron sights and scopes instead of just VATS

More use of non-combat skills, especially speech.

Factions, and standing / influence with each faction.

Almost no weapon recipes, but purchasable weapon mods and crafting of ammo, potions and weapon repair kits.

I thoroughly enjoyed FO3, but NV was better all around in my opinion.

Better story. More guns. More crafting. Better exploring. 90% less subway tunnels. :)

Yeah, I think the #1 thing that makes New Vegas better is that there's just more variety. More weapons, many weapons have mods, tons of crafting recipes to make food, medicine, repair kits, and ammo. Speaking of ammo, there are a lot of different ammo types as well, so you can get armor piercing ammo or hollow points that are effective against different enemies. The perks are more interesting whereas FO3's perks were mostly just "+5 to two skills." The main quest has four different outcomes, and there are far more side quests than in FO3. Despite having a smaller world map, New Vegas has more environments and variety.

FO: NV is a standalone game then? I thought it was a expansion pack, albeit a large one.

Actually I'm not using mods as we speak, but I'll be planning to use the wanderer's edition to check it out.

How did you get four power armored companions without mods?

Oh and if you try Wanderers Edition, just be warned - it's really hard. But without it, the game is quite easy, so maybe you want a change of pace. I tried it and it sort of kicked the game too far in the other direction in terms of difficulty. I do like many of the enhancements it has, but others are a bit too extreme.

Biggest problem for me in the vanilla game is too much health, both for enemies and yourself. I'm contemplating remaking my character to have 1 endurance and playing on Very Easy for lower enemy health, or I'll just look for a mod that reduces player and enemy HP without making all the other changes that FWE has.

I read a few pages about companions in fallout wiki. Red, Shorty and especially Sticky are very vulnerable w/o any decent armor. So you could imagine that I have to restart old saves if in case they were dead during questing.

I got sticky right after I enter lamplight caverns (you just have to wait a few hours or so in game time). He'll ask you a favor to escort him to big town and for my situation, I don't have to and amazingly he'll use whatever armor and even energy weapons you gave him (he's pretty good at least with a gattling lazer and a gauss rifle <---- great knock back weapon). While Shorty and Red can be found at German town HQ, you'll receive a quest called "big trouble at bigtown" and you don't have to bring all of the 3 "temporary" followers to big town at all :p.

The added difficulty with these companions is that for one, they have very low health, secondly they don't automatically heal after battles, they can flee during battles, activating traps and can get hostile easily if fired upon (1-2 shots). Eventually I end with a very versatile team who can pretty much kill anything even a behemoth on very hard difficulty (which I did last night) with the aid of a gauss and victory rifle for knockbacks

Separate game with its own DLC (which I haven't played yet, but the DLC reviews are better than for the FO3 DLC.)

The NV DLC's are better overall.

I enjoyed both games about the same.

Hopefully Fallout 4 uses the skyrim engine though because I'm getting sick of seeing the same engine over and over again.

I cant get FO3 GOTY to run on W7. Therefore FO:NV > FO3 for me.

It can be tricky getting it to work. Didn't work for me at first - well, it worked right off the bat, but then I started modding and it wouldn't work through Fallout Mod Manager.

Ended up going into Steam and verifying the integrity of the game files. Sure enough, it downloaded a new .exe and since then it's worked fine (other than the occasional random crashes you always get with Fallout 3).

New Vegas just turns everything orange...

Anyway, both are great games. My only gripe is that they are way too damn easy. Companions make you stupidly overpowered, and after the first 10 levels you just roll all over everything.

VATS, headshot, VATS, headshot, VATS, headshot...

Try not using VATS then. The problem is that the gunplay is pretty bad so it's difficult (in a frustrating way) to do that. Although I've been rolling Project Nevada and using bullet time entirely instead of VATS and it works pretty well.

You can get Syndey as welll, just don't finish the quest she's involved in. When she gets hurt, you can talk to her to offer her stim packs, I think.
