Finished building comp- What programs Do I need before connecting to internet?

anti virus and firewall, also soon as u get on the net download firefox...and do away with IE6

dunno bout any free ones, but if u have a Nforce3 250Gb chipset (athlon 64) then u will have an onborad hardware firewall, so ull need some form of drivers to run that (usually on a mobo utillity cd) and then update them once on the net

i have mcaffee enterprise 7.1 and i think its very good at what it does, its not free tho, maybe some other can point u in the right direction

if u can download any anti virus/ firewall on a computer thats already been up n running on the net, connecting a new unprotected computer to the net may not have a happy ending
 
Just DL ZoneAlarm, and a free AV software like AVG on to cd then add them before you connect to the net.
As other have stated goto mozilla.org and snag firefox for sure.

IF you are gonna add SP2 then get it on cd and add it 1st bedause it will hose the drivers for the firewall and AV software. I found that out the hard way.
 
All you need is to install windows. If you're refering to what you actually NEED to connect. You don't need a firewall or antivirus, just good to have.
 
I use AVG and Sygate for security
For spyware i use Spywareblaster, spybot, and ad-aware.
For a browser i use firefox

#1 concern is the firewall. It keeps your computer from "talking to strangers." What do you tell your kid to do if a stranger comes ringing the doorbell, and there's no adults around? "DON'T ANSWER THE DOOR." ZoneAlarm, Sygate, or the built-in Windows Firewall would be fine, and that is their function, to keep Windows from "answering the door" when just any computer happens along to try to strike up a conversation.

The other suggestions there are a combination of my experience here at the Forums, and also at work, where I have about 80 "kids" to keep out of trouble 😀 If you can get used to using a Limited account, that is a biggie, especially if the computer will be used by kids, pals, or computer-illiterates who don't know the peril of installing FREE LIVING DOLPHINS 3D SCREENSAVER OMG!!! or whatever.
 
Good antivirus progs: PC-Cillin, Panda, Node 32, Antivir (free), Kaspersky, etc. I've heard that AVG has slipped a lot lately in terms of relative goodness. Use only one. I use PC-Cillin (TrendMicro.com).
Good firewall progs: ZoneAlarm, Sygate, Outpost are all free for personal editions - if you are on broadband internet 24/7, buy the Pro versions. Use only one! I use Sygate.
Spyware blasters: I use both Spybot Search & Destroy and Adaware.
And one of the best things is to use some other browser than IE whenever possible. I use Mozilla as it is integrated browser/mail and news manager/HTML file editor/etc. And I'm used to the Netscape/Mozilla family as that's what I've used from just about the beginnings of the web as we now know it. There are some other good ones like Opera - it's just a matter of preference. Any of them are safer than IE even with all of the patches.
. Of course there is always Linux, etc. Then you wouldn't have to worry as much about the above.

I didn't much care for Firefox, it has nice plugins though. I have had no probs with IE, I like it fine.

I'd make sure you have SP2 mainly and antivirus. I use SP2 firewall, hardware firewall (router), and AVG... I don't count the spyware programs as "what you have to have before you connect" just get those after you get online. (Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, Hijackthis, CWShredder, Kill2me, etc)

It was nice for me since I could download WinXP Pro with SP2 and the current updates already on it from Microsoft and burn it onto a CD as my installer. XP Pro I know lets you make a new disc like that too but in your case that won't work. I know there is a 3rd party prog and website (just saw it the other day) that lets you make your own updated version discs
