finish upgrading the boys computer or just start over?

I have been fixing up my son's computer. Its and older compaq with a 300+ sempron and not much else. I have upgraded the RAM, vid card, wireless card, sound card and now I am sure that it needs a new power supply. The thing is that its still old and slow. I could probably sell it off for what I have into the upgrades and just build a new, decent rig.

Thoughts? Pay another $100 to get it in decent shape or build a new rig for ~$500 that will perform better?

It really all depends on if the current computer fulfills your sons needs on the computer, if so, then upgrades is fine, if not, go for a 500$ rig.

W/ all the deals available in this economy, buy your son a new computer IMO bro. 🙂

if you want your son to be able to play games, new computer

if you don't want your son to be able to play games, tell him to get a job or he's stuck with the current computer

$500 rig, dude. if you have the cash you can build some pretty sweet for that, and itll be easy to upgrade for the next couple years anyway.

dont buy him WoW

thats the thing...this current one is fine for everything but games. Him and I both like to dink around with games and now that I am on 2nd shift, I will have a ton of free time at night when there is nothing to do but game.

Sigh...time to start browsing fs/ft

I concur! :soda;

Save time and money. I assume you already own a monitor. Go to Dell's desktop section and browse all of their 'no monitor include' systems. There's a 530s for just unde3r $300.

$100+/-$10 will get you a motherboard and CPU much better than what you will be replacing. Another $20-$30 for 4Gb of RAM, $50 or so for decent PSU, keep old HDD, optical drive, and case, and maybe something like a 9800gt for $60.

people who are prone to addictive behavior will find something else to go overboard on. wow is only an issue if you allow it to be. ive been playing it since beta, still havent reached lvl 80, dont play every day, and rarely play at all in the evenings when my kids are awake. its possible to do this, im not really that special.
