Finding the fastest DNS server

This may be a dumb question, but here goes...😱

I had been having problems with my dial-up-networking just stopping for a while when looking up a domain. I finally figured out that I only had a primary DNS (which was my internet provider's). I set a secondary DNS (arizona.edu) and the stops are gone.

My question is this...is there any way to know what DNS server provides the fastest access in my area?

 
you can ping the dns server's IP addresses, I think that will give some idea on which one is faster. I'm no networking genius thought, I could very well be wrong.
 
Yes, but is there a list of ones I could try? I only know of two DNS servers (my ISP and arizona.edu). I'm in Oregon, so there must be a better choice than arizona.edu!
 
Here's something you could try (if you have access to a unix or linux system): Use the unix command whois. For example, whois anandtech.com or whois yahoo.com. This command gives lots of interesting information about the domain name, including the name server that it uses. Then just use nslookup to get the ip of the name server.
