I seem to Have lost my CD key for my Office XP while cleaning up my house. I know it will turn up eventually. but I want to put it in my computer files for safe keeping.

How do I find my Office XP CD key inside the registry???

Accoring to this website, you should be able to find it somewhere in the path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Registration

I'm not entirely sure if it will be in there, I'm just going off of the website.

Here's a follow on question - getting the Key ID from an installed system is no problem. But! How about this scenario. We have a legitimate copy of XP Pro, but the jewel case and ID is nowhere to be found. How can one get the ID from the CD itself? Surely it must know because it won't accept any but the exactly correct one. Ideas?

Call Microsoft, tell them you lost the CD Key, and they'll give you a new one.

Oops! misunderstood your question. Do what he said, MS will give you another key that will work.
Edit: "Surely it must know because it won't accept any but the exactly correct one.
No, any retail key will work with any retail cd, and so on.

Not true! I have three legit copies of Windows - each with a different key ID. I got the jewelcases and CDs mixed up - and in an installation, unless the correct ID was keyed in, the Setup rejected it. Only the right one will work. By trial and error, I eventually got them all matched up.

Are you saying that you think MS (or some publisher of theirs) prints each individual CD to match a particular license? Not very likely.

I used the keyfinder and it located the key, however the software does not seem to recognize the key found. Anyone have any ideas? Also, I understand the key is somewhere on the machine, does anyone know where?
