Finding a PSU

Hi,

going to use Althon 64, Venice or Opteron
1 to 2gb ram, motherboard, audigy 2

Nvidia 6800gs or 7800gt/x1800xl

1 dvd burner
3 to 4 case fans.

Someone please do the math for me.. i may go into sli in the future.

so any psu that can do 350 is fine rite?
I am planning to get the cheapest(cheap) reputated brand like Antec or Enermax(haha, that's the only two that i known of good. Please name a few)

My plaaning is to get the "ANTEC SmartPower450 450W "
is it ok? or any other choices?

I think the more important question is what brand/model PSU to get since the rated wattage of a PSU doesn't really matter unless it can actually handle that amount under load with minimal decreases in the voltage lines . . . the peak wattage is also important . . .

That being said, a Powerstream 520W SLI would be good for that rig you've got there . . . and it should be able to handle SLI as well later on if you choose to go that route . . . it's a high quality PSU and isn't SO expensive as to break your wallet . . .

If you want absolute quality though check out the PC Power & Cooling 510W SLI . . .

Seasonic. The 380 S12 should cover all your needs nicely.
 
Powerstream is still too pricy for me.
I know if i have a powerful system, a powerful PSU is a must.
However budget is just too tight here.
 
I have both the PowerStream 520 and the Antec NeoPower 480.

The OCZ model is more expensive, although I HAVE seen it on sale or with rebates for under $100.

I think I'm waiting to get a $20 rebate on a Neopower 480 I bought last month for $100.

The rails on the Neopower are well-adjusted -- very close to the voltage spec. Fact is, I bought two of them over three months -- the rebated unit is for my brother's upgrade. It's a darn good PSU, although I don't know precisely how adequate it would be for SLI systems with dual graphics cards.

In that case, I'd get the OCZ unless you want the PCP&C 510 or better.
 
For a healthy high end rig............NOTHING is more important than a stable PSU.

After all it's the guy that feeds all the other hardware inside the case.

Intel CPUs are power hungry hot monsters. Feed it well.

faye you are not the first,nor will you be the last, that will treat PSU selection as an after thought.

Good luck, but if you go with a POS PSU i will be amoung the many that will say...

faye......you really need to stop and think this through bro.....

You will find that the cheapest among name brands that are not over $100 are just that cheap.....

Your way better off spending around $100 or saving your hard earned allowance money and getting something that will last you a while.
 
I'll also add my recommendation to the seasonic s12 series. I own the 430w model and really like it. They are pricey, but very nice, quiet, and efficient. The efficient part generates less heat and will save you a little cash over the years on electricity. The one thing I don't like about the line is only the 500w and above give you the two 6 pin connectors for video cards. All the models less than 500w don't give you any and you'll be using 2 molex connectors per video card. But if you plan to run high end video cards in SLI I would recommend the 500w. Why do they go from 0 6pin connectors to 2 6pin connectors? Who knows.
 
Antec 380w truepower. Rock solid power supplies, around $50.
make sure you get the 2.0 version, or it won't have the 24pin connector you need for an a64 board.

enough?

and the complains are all about messy cords....
has anyone head of "2themax"? a sales told me that it is the same factory as Antec, it got all the certification of Antec gets...
i don't know... true or not..
I saw this brand very popular in HK. People in HK do rate this PSU very well too.. but just don't know if it is the same factory as Antec..

You need to understand that certification means nothing since there are no standardized guidelines for certification!

Also you need to understand that just becuase something comes from the same factory does not mean that the same quality of parts or even that the same parts are used.

Stay with a known brand name you won`t be sorry!!
 
I would stick with well-known companies such as Antec, OCZ, Seasonic, PC P&C, etc . . . really for $90 that TPII 550W SLI is a great deal . . .

That's one fan but it's a 120mm fan . . .

And yeah it's enough . . . it may get a little hotter than some PSU's but it will be very quiet, but still it will be sufficient to cool both the PSU and help your case ventilation . . .

It does have Active PFC but that's only required in Europe, not the US . . .

The TPII 550W would be a better choice and cheaper too . . .

Beware the Neo HE 500W it seems to have incomptibility issues with ASUS A8N-SLI motherboards . . . so don't get it if you plan on getting one of those mobos . . .
