African American =

NON-WHITE Americans who can trace their recent ancestry to Africa.

As opposed to white Americans who were actually born in an African country and have dual citizenship? I'm pretty sure white South Africans who emigrate to the United States have a much bigger claim to the "African American" title than a black American who has never been to Africa.

No they don't, invaders can't claim to be the people they invaded.

Sorry, can't tell if she has pointy elbows, so it doesn't count. She has pointy other things that keep drawing my interest, but I must with-hold judgement until I can judge her elbows. Can you please post another picture minus garmets so that I may more clearly see her elbows?
I could (unless you count a transparent sheet as a 'garment'), but it would not be acceptable in this thread. I'm sure if you do a Google Image search w/ the filter off, you'll find some galleries from photoshoots, and probably movie caps.

Oooh, looks like they're slightly pointy (site NSFW?), so she won't make the cut for an ATOT supermodel girlfriend (there's a nice view about 5 images to the left, BTW).

why not white?

Origin = Africa
Current whereabouts & citizenship = America.

Easy. Like if you see a black person in England. . . . are they africn american? nope, they be black!

who defines what is not white?
So you're saying a moroccan immigrant with double nationality isn't an african american?
does this mean he's white?
some of them don't look that white. What about countries on the border between black and brown?

During the last Olympics one of the African countries had an apparent Chinese woman representing them in Ping Pong. There are lots of people of Indian and Chinese descent in Africa as well. If Africans gain US citizenship and want to be called African American, who the hell are you to say otherwise?

many countries buy athletes originally from other countries.

I gotta go with DCal430 here... People are mistaking nationality for ethnicity/race

An african guy born in China is still african, not asian, though he might also be of chinese nationality

Guy in the OP seems like a white guy born in South Africa... How does that make him african-american? Nonsense

Are you saying there are no white Africans? If there are, what if the white African guy was born in China? 😵 Mind Blown!

It also seems a little presumptuous to assign the "-American" suffix label to a person that has never even been to America.

There have been many Chinese and Indians living in Africa for awhile, and they become Africans. Just like the Brazil has the largest population of people with Japanese descent outside of Japan. They are Brazilians now first and foremost. I know what your saying about fudging citizenship for the Olympics, but Congo has much more pressing issues to deal with.

Anyways, I found a picture of the 2008 African Womens Singles Tennis Table champion:

At what point does a black person cease to be African? Does it take 8 generations? 15? Are they African because their skin is black even if their ancestors haven't actually been from Africa for centuries? Is it just because they're black?

And if there's a white person born in South Africa, is he not African? Are white people born in America not American? Should we refer to ourselves as European even if our ancestors haven't been from Europe for centuries?

Isn't all that a whole hell of a lot more of a pain in the ass than just referring to people as black or white without assuming there's judgment being placed on the color of one's skin?

A lot of people in this thread don't know the difference between race and ethnicity.

If African-American is ethnicity that implies that American is a ethnicity.

So what does an American look like? A African-American should have genes from both the African ethnicity and the American one.

So, what do you consider "recent"? 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? 30 years? 40+ years? How long before they can just be called Americans and join the rest of us equally or do they always have to be separate from us?
