Gates' salary has been at or around this level for several years. I know a guy who did a lot of masonry work on his house...Gates had to file a petition with the county to lower his property taxes, which at about 700K/year was more than his salary.

I thought my property taxes were ridiculous. Geesh.

Why are people so confused by Gates' salary? 1. He is no longer the CEO. He stepped down. 2. Why can't people make more than him? He has stock options I'm sure. Also some people take profits and reinvest it into the company rather than pay themselves. Those are just two possibilities.
Actually, neither Gates nor Ballmer have stock options, but they own huge portions of the stock since the very beginning so that's why they're so wealthy.

hAH the bankrupt company I work for that was a spinoff of Enron paid each of its 8 or so execs between $300 000 and $700 000 while the company lost money and died. I love capitalism, but our corporate system is truly messed up. People only buy stocks in home they can resell them to someone else for more. You used to buy stocks to own the company and share in its profits.[/ Now many companies dont have profits, and those that do don't even pay them out to their owners!!! (dividends) .. Its all a big scam.. beware (from a Finance graduate) 😉

As a finance graduate I have to comment on this:

People only buy stocks in home they can resell them to someone else for more.
Not if you are selling short.

You used to buy stocks to own the company and share in its profits.
Not if you don't want the dividend income and are only seeking capital gains.

Now many companies dont have profits, and those that do don't even pay them out to their owners!!!
Research and Development costs money. Biotechs and Pharmaceuticals are famous for plowing back earnings. Declaring a dividend (or not) is not necessarily good or bad and must be viewed on a case by case basis.

Now as to why the salaries are "low" - tax implications from both the corporate and employee point of view.

Must of been some job since his house is embedded in a mountain...

And please folks, remember the click the name of the person to see how much more they are worth from first glance.

Why are their salaries always wierd numbers? eg. why not $550,000, instead they have something like $552,243 or $551,938? Why not an even figure?

Cool site but couldn't find the company I was looking for 🙁 Guess it has to be a publicly traded company?

And you are complaining about a 30% raise?

ok, let's say that you make $30,000 a year working for Food Lion, after your first raise you will be making $39,000!
2nd year $41,700!
3rd year $54,200!
4th year $70,480!

5th year of driving that Hi-Lo butt wasted and one wife/two kids later you will be making
$91,624!!

pfft...what a loser

Opps...hehe...I meant 3%...I wish it was 30😛

heh, reminds me of a PC Magazine issue a while back. They did something about the top 100 influential tech companies, during the dot com boom. A *LOT* of these companies were dot coms, with CEO's raking in Insane salaries.

About halfway in, Sony came up.

CEO's salary? It was either $200K or $2M a year. I don't remember which, but it made me do a double take.

Yes it does (that's the difference between a public and private company), and they probably, no, surely got all of these figures from Edgar filings (10-k, 10-q, and other mandatory filings). Anyone can search for the same stuff at edgar.com. So, why is this a hot deal?

For the guy who was going to pass around his boss's salary in an email, have you ever looked at your company's annual report? You'll find a lot more interesting stuff than your boss's salary, I can assure you.
