Instead of BMI, doctors should measure body fat percentage:


no disagreement but body fat % is harder to measure. BMI is very easy. it works at the population level but is terrible when an individual has an "extreme" physique like a lot of muscle mass. i wouldn't be surprised if most athletes that perform a lot of strength training are "obese" by BMI standards despite being in incredible physical condition.

You don't even need to go to "athletes" ... 5-9 170 is "overweight".

They did a caliper test when I was in the military to check body fat (good for those muscular folks). My current scale has sensors and a body fat calculation, no idea how accurate it is but when I look at image representation of people with my body fat level, it seems fairly accurate.
 
The whole thing with the military Fat Boy programs all turned into a joke by the time I retired from working with the Navy, Lot of Chiefs looked like the Chiefs of old (pre-Fat Boy) when I first started working back in 1980. (retention issues)
