Financial Aid/FAFSA questions

okay so i just submitted my FAFSA application for the 2002-2003 school year because i'm transferring to UC Davis in the fall. I get my SAR (Student Aid Report) and it says my family is expected to contribute about 23k for the school year! that's a whoooole lot. The avg for a student at UC Davis is only like 16k, about 8k living off campus (which i'll be doing). I'm listed as a dependent to my parents. Do they make too much for me to receive any aid?

calculating it out it would mean we would have to pay about 500 a month for me to go there. Add to that the cost of the house, cars, living expenses, etc. i'm not sure if we can afford this. Anyone have any suggestions? Anyone been through a situation like this? I'd really hate to put that much burden on my parents. I'll probably get a job over the summer most likely.

If it says your family is suposed to contribute 23K, then you will get no financial aid. They assume your parents can cover your full education.

Check the SAR for any mistakes (big numbers entered).

can i tell them i'm an independent student living at my grandma's house down the street... you know... kinda fool them haha

Pretty hard to prove you're independant.
Also, make sure your folks took all the credits.........whoa, never mind, they made too much.

At 23k contribution, how much do your parents make a year?? That's a lot for parental contribution...you must be well off. Hehe.

Basically, I don't think anybody's family can afford to pay what they say you should be able to pay. But then, they don't take into consideration payments on the car, house, etc, or any other kind of debt you might have.

If my family paid the EFC amount and no more, we could afford it for 1-2, *maybe* 3 years at the most before going broke, basically. :Q That includes my parents' retirement funds.. But I'll be in college for quite a bit longer than that.. [EEK! lol]

Well, there's no denying that college tuition has skyrocketed beyond the standard of living earned by most Americans. That being said, at 100k unless you have a couple of siblings in college, you should not have a problem at school. If you did YOUR part and did well in school, you should get some assortment of small scholarships/grants that will help cover your costs. The cost of car payments and living off campus are quite frankly your choosing and hence problem. If you want to cut down on costs, get a cheap car or bicycle and live in a dorm like the rest of us broke college kids. At 100k a year, your family's doing very nicely I might add. Hehe.

ehhh when i meant off campus i meant that i'd be commuting from home to school... i live in Sacramento and UC Davis is only about a 15-20 minute drive... i suppose it should be too hard to cover what we'd have to pay... i'll probably get a job over the summer and see if i can keep it up while going to school.,.. gonna have to talk to my parents about this tonight... i'd really hate to end up going to Sac State after being so hyped up about going to UC Davis

Well, good luck with going to UC Davis man...I hope your parents work out everything just fine for you-- remember, let them do the financial worrying since they now what they can and can't afford, you just concentrate on school and help out where you can.

I think you have to be near the poverty level to get any kind of money from Fafsa. Most students will have to take out loans to afford to go. If you only borrow 8k a year and say your going for 4 years, you'll only have 32k in loans when you graduate. It may seem like a lot but with a decent job you shouldn't have any problems. They also are very lenient if you are having problems getting a job.

yeah it looks like i'm going to have to apply for a few loans. going to have to talk to my parents about it. we wouldn't have to borrow all we need because i think my parents can pay for some of what we have to pay. plus i'm going in at junior status level so i'm probably only in school for another 2 years. Hmmm maybe it won't be so bad.
