Lots of money for toys, but not enough money to buy a decent digicam. How typical.

I have an SD1100IS, read the thread. I havent had a chance to take pics with it yet, just got the car yesterday.

And FYI the SD1100IS is more than decent for what I take pictures of. Im not going to spend hundreds of dollars on a camera that I use to take pictures at weddings and parties.

There is nothing wrong with the SD1100IS...however; it's not a bragging rights cam.

2006 WRX.

My next car is going to have to be more comfortable since I now commute 80 miles a day round trip on the interstate. So I was actually looking at these simply because they are so *pretty*.

I love how the billboards for these cars PROUDLY boast 26 MPG. i don't think people in that market particularly care. I'm sure they could comfortably afford to fuel their cars...

Very nice ride BTW

lease? wait, you dont own the car at all then? you pay 25k to rent it for 39 months, and then have nothing to show for it afterwards? with an owned car you can sell it or trade it for your next one? am i missing something here? leasing sounds kind of dumb...

The lease is costing me $4,000 + (505x39)= $23,695

Ok, so if I bought the car for $42,5 + tax/fees that comes out to about $46,000 out the door.

Lets say I drive the car for 39 months, and say I put 40,000 miles on it (which is what the lease allows)

At the end of the 39th month, I try to go sell it. Ill get *maybe* $23,000 for the car. So I will have laid out $23,000 and still have nothing to show for it. Plus I have to go through the hassle of selling the car.

These cars depreciate too quickly and I'd also like to avoid the hassle of keeping the car and maintaining it after the warranty expires.

Still sound dumb?

Mind you this is my first lease.

I used to say the same thing. Then I realized that the used 740iL that I bought in 2002 that I was driving for the last 6 years cost me close to $7,000 a year after counting the cost of the car+maintenance. By leasing, I pay a little bit more, get to drive a brand new car, and dont have to worry one bit about breakdowns/maintenance.

Granted, leasing isnt for everyone, but if you have the up front money for it and would like to get a new car every few years, it does make sense.

There are other cars that you can purchase new with free maintenance options and you can always trade it in every few years to keep driving new cars.

The biggest drawback for me about leasing is the mileage restriction, I can never drive less than 12K miles a year even if I rotate cars. 15K a year is still pushing it, and you'll still have to think at the end of the lease, what sort of reductions, deductions you'd end up with either you if you decide to keep it or give it back.

Even used car can be good, if you inspect it before hand. I bet you walked right into that 740iL and didn't really take a good look at it. 7K per year for maintenance is crazy, what did you do, replace a transmission every year?

Ummm read the thread. 7k includes the cost of the car. I didnt pay 7k a year in maintenance!!! And I bought the car from a family member who bought it brand new and treated it like one of his kids. He is super anal about his cars.

Mileage is one of the reasons I never leased before. Now that I live 7 miles from work and only work 3 days a week, it is feasible for me.

I didnt want one of the "other cars." The point was I still wanted a luxury german automobile but didnt want the headache of buying used and having to deal with the problems they usually run into.

Uh, a new BMW comes with free maintenance.

So how old was the 740 when you bought it?

Seriously. What part of "I want to avoid the headache of maintaining the car" dont you get? I dont want a car more than 3/4 years, which WOW is coincidentally the same period of "free maintenance" BMW offers. If I were to sell it at that point, I would come out with around the same money OOP as I would if I leased, without the headache of having to sell the car.

LOL. Serious troll is serious. Alk, please go away.

As for akshatp, you said you DON'T want to deal with the hassle of maintenance, so you LEASE a car. Your story.

You can only DRIVE the freaking lease for 50K miles, as you said because you're allowed 12K miles a year. Let's say you drive your lease for 4 years, that's 48K miles. A BRAND SPANKING NEW BMW will come with 50K miles free maintenance, well within your requirement.

You THINK you'll get out of a lease easily, which is another mistake but since this is your first lease, I'll let you find out about it. If you were to PURCHASE one, you can just bring it back when your free maintenance is over, and TRADE your car in. You'll get a much better deal than to either re-lease, or deal with over mileage, or deal with deductions... etc.

Anyways, nice car, congrats. Enjoy.

Class, dismiss.

OK, so why dont you school me on why it will be hard to get out of my lease? My other cousin has leased 3 cars from this particular MB dealer, and each time has turned it in paying only the $595 lease turn in fee. One car he turned in had considerable surface scratches/dings and they didnt charge him a penny. My uncle(his dad) bought his first MB from this dealer in 1982.

Trade value aint worth sh*t... I'd be lucky to get 18k on a 4 year old car with 50,000 miles on it (assuming MSRP 42,5)

1st free maintenance is usually not really free. It's a bundled product. Personally I try to avoid the dealership for the most part as no matter how exclusive the car is the dealership is hardly a quick experience.

Also with many 'deals' you can have the salesman add-on things like oil changes and the like at point of sale during negotiations.

Leasing can make a lot of sense, with many cars in this economy the leasee came out ahead.

However, leasing doesn't usually make sense for those looking to stay in a car a long time.

I'd be well suited for a lease, I drive about 500-750 miles a month only.

My first and only lease I was actually able to sell for a lot more than the turn in costs. I went that route and the car sold fast.

Also the main purpose of buying/leasing non-new is 1) much better pricing and 2) being able to get into a vehicle that you could not afford new.

Alkemyst, BMW's come with FREE maintenance with the price of the car for 4 years or 50K miles, unconditional. I don't really care what other cars you're interested in, I was talking about BMW's exclusively.

I will never lease, I actually was looking at one a few months ago but decided against it because it's too restrictive. I like to do things to my cars, doesn't matter what kind of car they are, I'll always do something to them. Leasing will prohibit me from doing a lot of these things, and I've already mentioned the mileage restriction and the asinine end of lease inspections.

Not that I'd go and ding or scratch up my car, but FSM (referencing his holy flying noodly appendages) forbids, if I ever nick up the car, or scratch it. For me the financing terms have always been 4 years, so even if I decide to change car 2 years after drive off, I'm OK with it. One this is for sure, I'll never buy a new car again, ever. I can easily pick up a CPO or an inventory excess (which is brand new) without the brand new sticker price and they still come with brand new car perks (again, BMWs... or depends on how you negotiate at other dealers).

I personally would just pay a bit more for any car and own it outright so I can do whatever I please to it, than to baby it.
