I tried pulling an allnighter for an organic chem exam. Didn't work, so if I'm not done studying I say fvck it and go to sleep. :D

when i was a student, i never pulled an all-nighter, they generally never work. Now that I'm a faculty member at the local university, I deplore my students from doing the same.

I don't know if that qualifies as an urban legend, old wives' tale, or conventional wisdom, but it's false.

i don;t believe in all nighters ... i usually will go to bed and wake up early to studay...but then again I also dont; wait to the last minute...i usually start studying a few days before the exam.

Finals do suck...mine start next week yet I have another test today (hardest test ever) and two projects plus a paper due at the end of the week...then I get to study for finals...college life is just grand.

Well, it should have been phrased as "If you keep the room too warm, it will promote sleepiness." One inflection of that might be "If you keep the room cold, it will not promote sleepiness."

Not that I recomend it but when I was in college and I needed to do an all nighter I use to take speed. I use to ace of my finals when I did. Of course the best solution was to be ready for the finals days in advance ( had a 3.5 GPA)

unplug your computer from the intarweb would be my advice, though.

Are you in engineering? If so I admire your time management skills. I myself, have never pulled an all-nighter, but I've pulled off several (almost weekly) 3-4 hours of sleep nights. Either way, I gotta get back to studying, I got the ol' screwjob because of the exam schedule.

Sheer Will power. Sleep is for the weak.
Well, your capacity to tolerate sleep deprivation is not your choice, its a feat of biology that was not your own chosing.

Those with high tolerance for sleep deprivation LOVE to believe in the fantasy that they by some matter of choice 'will' themselves to stay awake. Haha, sorry, that's not the way the brain works, and its not the way sleep tolerance works, either. Its like saying "I used sheer will power to develop an immunity to Malaria." Umm...no.

ditto with the guys that say its hard and mostly everyone I know have pulled all nighters. Except for the few that are very organised and study asap etc etc. You know the difference. But then you also know the difference between the people who work all nighters and get good grades then the ones who get *ok* grades.

I've many all nighters. At the end of each project I will be there doing an all nighter. Twice I've done 50hrs straight, that was hardcore. This was doing an assignment and NOT studying for an exam mind you.

I'd seriously not pull out an all nighter before my exam. Sure I'd study but not study all night. I would want some sleep before the exam.

The person who said Will Power is definately correct. Its the will power and drive that makes you want to go on stay up and do the work. I don't think I could study for 24hrs but I could certainly and have worked and finished off assignments for that period of time though:D. Also YOU GOT to finish as its due in 12hrs or so:D

End of semester exams 13,14,15 and 17 January so about a month to revise.

It's part of the college experience to find out your study style. Some can pull all-nighters, some sleep early and get up early, some take caffeine pills or drink lots of coffee, some don't study and just give up, others go to the 24 hr study room (which will be full), and others do whatever.

After a couple of quarters, you'll find something that works for you. Personally, I couldn't do the cramming nor staying up all night, so I started actually studying and keeping up with the class. Come midterm or finals time, there's not much to study if you've stayed on top of the class since everything is the same. All you need to do is put everything you've learned together, so that it makes sense. Then your mind has a good mental image of all the information, how they relate, and poof, not much cramming, memorization required.

Of course, that's the optimal study method, and very few do that.

"If you're missing sleep because you're doing schoolwork, you're doing something wrong."

Very true, all-nighters are allright for projects etc., but you will never "learn" anything by doing this. Do yourself a favor and manage your time more wisely and study before. Your sleep is better the night before an exam. What good does it do to know the material if you fall alsleep and drool all over your test the next morning?

ephidrine == gods gift to all nighters;
redbull == liquid jib;

however if you are at the point where you are doing taking ephidrine with redbull you should just start taking pure speed or meth, it'd be better for your heart in the long run.

woohoo i pulled it off. felt pretty good after the final exam too. answered all of them confidently except for 2 questions. What sucked the most was that i was so tired after the final and the parking lots are pretty far, and naturally as soon as i step outside the building, its raining like a mother. oh well, time to knock out till the evening before i study for my next final (next one isn't so bad, easy class and its at 10am). goodnight folks!

i'll keep that red bull in mind next time though. i've drank some of that stuff before clubs and i was wired all night. forgot about that!

I only have pull all nighter on papers, projects & labs, but never had done with exam. As, I have posted a while back that studies shows that human brain funtion best with regular nightly sleep & cat nap at mid day.
