Finally watching LOTR

I've read the series at least 10 times, in my short 17 years. I didn't want to watch the movie, because I am a very visual reader, and I didn't want to ruin my strong mental image of the books. I finally gave in though, started watching tonight. I'm at the point where they just entered Moria. I'm kinad disappointed, it isn't bad, but sooo much is left out. I suppose it is understandable, if they put in everything the movie would be 30 hours long. But alot of stuff was altered, because it was too confusing to those who haven't read it, and even how it is, if you haven't raed the book, there is no way you would understand what's going on. All in all, it wouldn't be too bad of a movie, if the book weren't so much better. Oh well...at least the mental image is still goin strong.

Not true... I watched the movie before I read the books and I understood everything perfectly after watching it once...

lol I'm not bashing the LOTR, I love the series, IMO its far and away the best thing ever written. That's why no movie could live up to that.

Really? It seems like it would be too much, too many characters to really understand...I know my gf just saw it, and she never read it, and she is totally lost.

That's how I feel about it, it would be a great movie if the books werent so much better.

Do what I do and seperate the books and movies. They are seperate entities. It's dumb to think i could ever been 100% accurately adapted to the screen. Actually it's impossible.

great I never read the books and followed most of it, I did get lost with all the names thrown around, but stayed with it. I had to watch the second time with subtitles to understand everyones accent. Now you say the books are way better, I was just about to get them from the library. How long are these books anyways?

long. Depending on the font size the trilogy is 1000-1300 pages or around there.

I watched the movie several times before i even read the books. I loved the movie and understood it well. My mom hasn' read the books either and she loved it. Same goes for a few friends, my brother, and some co workers. IMHO the movie was very well done, and granted no way it could live up to what th human imagination can produce, it was a great and well done effort.

Well said. Peter Jackson is a god for this reason...dedicating 8 years of his life so fans of Tolkien could at least see something of value on the screen. Ralph Bakshi can eat my poop.

I read the last two books in realatively quick time. The Two Towers took my 5 days to read. The return of the king took my 1 day. I was bored yes, but I wanted to finish this excellent series

He'd have to be a huge fan. Can you imagine someone who didnt care making this movie?

Just finished it...I gotta admit, the Balrog was cool as hell. Galadriel and Lothlorien were disappointing IMO...and they really changed that last scene. Oh well, all in all a good movie. Just not as good as the books.

Deeko, you should wait for the extended cut in november. It will include the whole gift giving scene, along with Gimli falling for Galadriel and asking for the hair.

From an objective standpoint, the movie is very well done; directing (Jackson sort of gave it an "indie" feel), effects, acting and screenplay.

But, of course, I haven't read any of the books. That's why it's objective .

Yea they skipped so much there...suddenly they are at Bree. Everything from leaving hobbiton to bree is gone.

Agreed. They rushed the first 30 minutes over the first 200+ pages of the book, then gave fifteen minutes to the line which goes something along the lines of: "...then they rushed into the Great Hall" (referring to the section where Gandalf & company enter the great hall of Moria, shortly before being ambushed by hundreds of orcs and the huge balrog.)

I hope I didn't ruin it for anybody.

theres no pleasing anyone that reads a thousand page book 10 times i read it once and after i saw the movie too hehe.

not that i think the movies perfect that acid trip scene annoys me every time.
