I'd put Paul third probably. I'm not much of a sci-fi guy, so probably missed tons of the references which might make it more enjoyable. It was good, not great.

Paul isn't part of the trilogy. Shawn > Hot Fuzz > At Worlds End

What "Trilogy" ? It was written by/starred Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The other three or not story related in any way...

I knew Paul isn't part of the Cornetto Trilogy, but it's the same basic structure...a film based on homages to many other films in it's genre. Pegg and Frost...but not directed or co-written by Edgar Wright like the trilogy.

Paul had some fun moments but it lacked the subtlety of character that the others had.

For me Hot Fuzz>Shaun of the Dead>>>>>World's End=Paul (the latter two are very different but I didn't enjoy either of them anywhere close to the other two).

Hot Fuzz tread so many angles very well and it was genuinely surprising, especially after how it was marketed. I think that might also be why some people don't like it as much. The previews I saw it came off as a non-stop action movie (and I wanted that), but it had a slow build-up and had heavy horror elements.

Shaun of the Dead is fun, but it is pretty on the nose and straightforward. Hot Fuzz shows them elevating many of the things that made Shaun of the Dead, but they took it to the next level.

World's End was a step too far though. Almost none of the characters were actually endearing, and it just went off the rails. Paul was just like a pale imitation of Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead.

I'd agree that overall Hot Fuzz is the best film or the 3 (or 4). I think that you're all being a bit hard on World's End though but maybe you have to be British and of a certain age to connect to it.

Id rank the trilogy in the order they came out. Shaun>Fuzz>Worlds End...and then Paul. Id say Worlds End and Paul im fine having only seen once. The other 2 i can watch often.

I don't think that's the issue (the pub culture I'm assuming you're saying about time and place experience adding to perspective?). Its the characters, and overall story. Its a weird mix of mundane and over the top that just fails compared to the first two. But even the part of them finding out what's going on and then just continuing is just...weirdly senselessly odd. And it just really went off the rails from there. I just feel like the setup and premise don't mix at all so it felt forced. And compared to the first two where they could both mock and pay homage, World's End fell almost totally flat for me in that regard.

I could see you saying that if people weren't enjoying Spaced for instance, as there is quite a lot of things there that I think having that perspective would greatly enhance your enjoyment of it.

Pub culture, market town chav culture, 80s UK goth stuff, there's loads of stuff there that got me in the feelies before the weird hit.
