Man It's been awhile since I seen a distortion field like this. Always the problem with forums (Especially Audiophiles) is minor grievances get exploded out of proportion. I personally own a HP ZR24W, I upgraded because my old 1650x1080, got a dead pixel, wanted a 16:10 resolution (1920x1200), and OLED was still a ways away. If you can wait for an OLED to become affordable, do that otherwise understand that each format has it's pro's vs cons.

TN = Best for a twitch gamer (most people think they are, but aren't. If you aren't playing at ridiculous dpi on your mouse, where tapping the mice makes you do a complete 360 you probably aren't hard core enough for it to matter. There are always outliers to this rule)

Cons = Panels are generally lower quality, and overall color reproduction is considered sub-par to the alternatives. Extremely narrow viewing angles

PVA = Is considered the King of Black Levels. For those people that need the depest blacks, this is considered the safe haven.

Cons = Largely considered the monitor with the most amount of input lag (on the level of TV's, so if you played a game like guitar hero and noticed it, expect that). As a special note, like to note my brother who is pretty damn good at Battlefield 3, plays on a pva monitor perfectly fine. So the issue is probably blown out of proportion in regards towards input lag.

IPS = Is considered the best for color reproduction, viewing angles

Cons = Input lag is greater than a TN, but for most is not a major deal. Do note that they are notorious for backlight bleed (mine has it). So blacks come out as grey in heavy dark scenes.

E-IPS = Considered a more middle of the road variant, bit faster on input lag than ips, but trades color quality for it.

120 HZ = Can't say anything with any authority, I've heard lot of good things that it feels like a pretty significant upgrade (smoother, etc).

I'll just add this to your distortion field. They don't make PVA anymore. Samsung makes PLS now which is a derivative of IPS. Why? Because "king of black" had color shift making things not so black or too black and worst response times so no one bought it and reviewers trashed it.

Well if an OLED monitor that's amazing comes out in 7 months or so i'll buy it and i'm more than happy to just throw what i buy now into the trash, which obiously i won't.

But so much conflicting information makes this decision hard as hell :p

I'm selling my NECs the day OLEDs are released irrespective of price. I hate LCDs that much:) I've gone through literally dozens of samples never been happy.

But those links I gave you are the hottest deals by far in LCD tech atm.

If you can wait, OLED displays are getting large enough in size that they should take over LCDs before too long.
Respectfully, OLEDs have been just around the corner for the last 5 years now. Until someone with a solid reputation announces the specs and shipping date for a desktop OLED monitor, it's all a pipe dream.

This thread has done nothing but make it harder for me to decide.

think i'll probably go with the 120hz and if the quality bothers me i'll just fork out for something different.

Get a 27/28 inch monitor they're way more fun and better than a puny 23 inch. I went from a 21inch CRT to my HannsG and honestly its the best PC gaming upgrade I ever bought even if its way inferior to IPS panel ( Which I never tried). They're relatively cheap and make watching films/multimedia when resting tired mouse hands loads better. They also make gaming MUCH more fun. Also I game a lot and love having a nice big screen less than two feet away making it incredibly immersive (to quote a friend who flies a 24inch HP panel). Obviously if you prefer a small image far away buy a tiddler!

I agree, I moved from a 2070SB CRT to a S27A750D (120hz) a few months ago, and the main reason was the bigger display size. That alone makes games a lot more immersive at the same viewing distance.

The motion blur is definitely there at high (constant 80+) framerates and is not subtle, even though this is one of the fastest LCDs around. I have gotten used to it in most games and just think of it as an ingame graphical effect. :p There are still a few games that give me headaches after 30 minutes, and I use the CRT for those. On the positive side, there is essentially no input lag (measured with the lag tester) compared to the CRT.

The black level is great in a bright room due to the glossy coating, and terrible in a dark room. No LCD does a good job with this in a dark room, and the best option for blacks is a glossy panel with the room designed around it so there are no direct light sources facing it. The TN color shifts are annoying but can be minimized by adjusting the height and distance of your chair exactly right.

The CRT is 7 years old and has its own issues, despite doing certain things very well. If OLED computer monitors ever actually make it out to mass-market (as Virge said, we have been hearing about them for ages), I'll jump on them right away.

OP when I win the Mega Millions I will invest in old technology and release a line of brand new 24" widescreen CRT's. I know you probably can't hold off until this happens, but don't fret once I win the lotto CRT technology will make a come back for the hardcore few who demand the best.

PS I've never noticed motion blur with my monitor but that might just be me.

This

Until I actually see them on the market for less than the price of a small car. I'm putting them in the same category as Flying cars, Jet Packs and cold fusion.

The OP held on to his CRT until now. That implies rather heavily that he is far closer to the mindset of those trashing the rather shockingly huge shortcomings of LCDs then he is to those who want to marginalize them.

try plasma

Plasmas flicker and have rather serious issues with IR when used as a PC monitor. The IR may be a minimal issue, the flicker if the person sees it makes plasmas unusable trash(sadly, I fall into this category, plasmas flicker makes me sick to my stomach within a couple of minutes :( ).

Respectfully, OLEDs have been just around the corner for the last 5 years now.

A valid point, however unlike the previous years we saw sales surpass ten million units for OLED displays last year. Procution capability is ramping up sharply now, it is a matter of when they will hit the sizes we need.

I know you probably can't hold off until this happens, but don't fret once I win the lotto CRT technology will make a come back for the hardcore few who demand the best.

Cost no object we can get the best now-

PVA really is my preference. I have an old 24" LG PVA and the PQ is better than my dell IPS, imo. The black levels are beautiful. Response time is crap though, no doubt. I don't notice it on my IPS, but can see it on the PVA in an FPS game.
