Finally updated from XP to Windows 7 64 today

It's amazing how much quicker this is.

Unfortunately I have some hardware that doesn't work.

My Echo Darla soundcard which isn't even listed on Echo Audio's 'discontinued products' page anymore it's so damn old. (I have 2 soundcards in my computer, this interfaces with my mixer board with the larger 1/4" input/output jacks. That thing was $300. :\

And my very important Midisport Midiman that interfaces standard midi cables to USB so that I can use my external hardware midi synth. For this, I might be able to wait for a driver update. Or I can buy a newer external synth that has bult-in usb capability but they are $400.

Anyways, I'm happy to finally be away from XP.

I mean, seriously. They supported Vista 32/64 just fine, releasing a small driver package without the software baggage.
But Windows 7? Which is just an update to the Vista kernel (6.1 as opposed to 6.0.x), is all of a sudden difficult to make a driver for?
If I want to get a driver from HP for Windows 7 64bit, they do have one... but it's over 200mb loaded with unnecessary software baggage. Ugh.
Is there a way to fix the driver issue for my HP Photosmart D7160 without resorting to that waste of resources they call a driver package?

Download the driver, only install the core driver and other wanted packages. Anything you dont want can be removed from msconfig.

really you want windows 7 32 bit - all of your hardware will work and drivers exist.

64bit is overrated unless you have like 6gb of ram. 4gb is probably not worth it given the amount of legacy apps that just don't install.

if the soundcard means that much to opp; love will find a way through. Though I've not used it, search for a way to use XP mode to connect to the hardware. If not, get a vm solution that'll let you do it.... or try linux- those crazy ppl will write 0's and 1's for societally defunct hardware until the day the corpses of gates and jobs rise from the earth, embrace, and sing kumbaya.

Sooner XP dies the better,7 is a far superior OS and yes I was an ex long term XP user,why hang on to an old inferior dated OS if you don't need too?...
