but they do. Its actually the most amazing thing about the American experiment. Within 1 generation those kids are decidedly american. Its a wonderful thing to see and I'm sure you have friends whose parents came to America. Do they not seem assimilated to you?
I do see it, in some but not all cases. It's the danger inherent in any discussion of groups that some get lumped in where they don't belong. I think you touch on an area where compromise is still possible; we've all seen immigrant families who assimilate well and are more American than many native-borns. That's what needs to be touted and encouraged, in exchange for allowing the deportation of illegal workers who are just here to send money home, we fast track those who are assimilating well, have families, and WANT to be American.

Compromise is hardly possible in today's environment; once you characterize your opponent as evil instead of merely misguided, how then can you justify a compromise with evil?

Thirdly, I think any remaining animus some groups of our population have against immigrants has far more to do with lack of assimilation than physical appearance. It's not fashionable now to insist that immigrants adopt the customs and language of their host country, though it could be seen as reasonable reciprocity for our hospitality. But that would actually increase our cohesiveness as a nation, and if there is one thing that is universally reviled by those so-much-smarter-than-you kind of people, it's any hint of patriotism; it's simply no longer allowed.

Bullshit. The greatest animus towards immigrants exists where immigrants don't live. What people out in Trump country know about immigrants is what they see on TV. It's all well cultivated fear of the unknown.

And so, we all oppose each other, and nothing changes. The extremes continue to rule the narrative and little of sense or substance will get done. Even though I join these conversations knowing full well the utter futility of doing so, i'm still disappointed to realize that almost no one is interested in a real dialogue. I'm sorry to have wasted my time, and yours for that matter. Ciao.

but we dont have ghettos of people from certain places. Sure we have people who live in areas. Like china town or korea town or a Caribbean area. But they all go to american schools and they all have children who like basketball and mcdonalds and going to see super hero movies. Europe is very different. Its really a testament to what we have here.

american culture is all culture. This is the greatest human accomplishment ever made. Just because some backwoods people who have no exposure think its a weakness means nothing in the long run. Those simple people have lived in this America along side those who understand since its inception. In the past the hated people were the irish or the german or whatever other group is "new" and foreign. Time normalizes these new cultures and assimilates the good parts into the broader culture. This is operating as it should be.

Well said, except for the part about "backwoods people". Rural people well know immigrants. They see them working at the meatpacking plant for $10/hour - a job that used to pay twice that, before we brought in people willing to work in third world conditions for half the prevailing wage. They see them when the baseball field gets torn up to build a soccer field. They see them when existing businesses close and new businesses put up signs in Spanish. They see them when school janitorial jobs are cut in favor of big companies offering cut rate prices with illegal aliens earning minimum wage. They see it when the house next door goes into foreclosure and becomes some slumlord's rental home for a dozen or more young single men, so that their daughters aren't safe and their own home becomes unsaleable.

It's a fallacy that "backwoods people" have no exposure to illegal immigrants; they are the some of those hardest hit, having fewer resources and options.

i said nothing about illegal immigrants in that post. Everything was about culture. Your post was just a boiler plate of anti immigrant bullshit.

It was almost a cut & paste from propaganda central. White America is under Attack! We're being invaded! Must protect the American Way! Not a soccer field! Oh, the Humanity!

The allusion to Mexican rapists was particularly touching, I think.

America is like the Borg. Resistance is futile, even for our own conservatives.
