Finally there might be a good heatsink for X-Qpack/MicroFly/low profile cases

Scythe Shuriken SCSK-1000

It is a heatsink with fan that is under 70mm tall, fan included. Heatsink has thin aluminum fins and copper heatpipes. Fan is an oddball 100x12mm PWM unit.

I've found pricing from $32-35, but very few places (maybe 2?) said in stock.

This might be the best heatsink available that can slide in with the motherboard in my X-Qpack2. Anyone using it? I'm tired of the stock Intel HSF holding back my clocks. :disgust:

I've found that the Scythe "clip-mounting" mechanism isn't so... motherboard friendly. The wide base means that the motherboard needs a lot of clearance around the CPU socket so the heatsink can fit, and on a motherboard like mine (GA-P35-DS3R), mobo components prevent the heatsink from going down all the way. I'm not familiar with mATX motherboards, though, so this may or may not be a problem.

I'd like to see a comparison between the Scythe Shuriken and the Zalman 8700.

Pricewise at least the shuriken wins over the zalman (cheapest I found was $50)

Heh, looks like a squashed Scythe Samurai-Z...which incidentally is $10 cheaper (but also too tall to fit without modification). I'm guessing that the price should come down when it's not so new.

Always good to find another good, compact HSF that cools by intelligent design rather than brute force (e.g. Tuniq tower and similar).

I wonder if this will work in an Silverstone SG01, or how it compares to the NT06 in that case at least.

I think you have to run the NT06 fanless in the SG01. I assume this Scythe HSF will fit, fan and all.

Blah...

Id look at a water solution then. :T

I think i could custom a small kit which could handle a quadcore G0, and cost less then 150.

Another option would be to remove all or part of the HDD support beam, so you can install large HSFs after the motherboard tray is already in. I only ended up cutting around 2/3 of it off in my QPack, because I still wanted to be able to use 2 HDDs in the side bracket. The difficulty with that is that it requires a fair amount of manual dexterity and small hands (or lots of patience and a pair of pliers) to be able to install the retention hardware after the fact. Took me a fair amount of effort to maneuver all the thumbscrews onto my HSF's retention bracket and get them installed.

Well I got two of them about a week ago (Directron). I haven't used the heatsinks in anything yet.....I bought them for the fans. Very unusual fan.....nothing else like it. It blows more air than you'd think, but at 12v it's too noisy for me. I'm running it about 5-7V.....very quiet.

Unfortunately.....the fan needs a PWM control to stay running @5V, and mine won't start at 5V . It needs the 12v blast from my controller to start, which then drops back to the 5V idle speed.

And... there is a PWM-induced clicking at anything below 12V. I needed an M-Cubed attenuator to tone down the PWM noise.

The heatsink itself looks ideal for a very short case. The heatpipes only contact the fin-pack on the upper 1/2 of the pipes (some sort of glue-on setup)....unusual. It came with a big bag of different attachment brackets.....probably would fit anything.

You'll have to settle for my craptastic webcam pics :p. Unfortunately, it only has a two foot cable, and I'm trying to take pics of the same thing it's tethered to...

right side (looks pretty precarious, but there's surprisingly no sag on the drive bracket...knowing you though, you'd want to put a bayres in there instead :D)
left side (no mods done to this side, so not much to see)
cover on (replaced the acrylic, which was impossible to keep pristine)

Hmm, that last pic turned out particularly bad. The cam has trouble with anything mildly reflective.

ahahahaha very nice system.

Still hard to believe thats your first prebuilt was a simular setup on the same case. :T

Heh, well back then, it looked much more "stock". It's gradually evolved over time into what it is now. The mesh sides came around the time I salvaged a Prescott from a used Dell to stick in there . I miss my little space heater these cold nights :(.

The Mini Ninja is more like a 2/3 Ninja, not a ½. It is around 110mm tall or something like that, meaning it is around 30mm too tall, so not even close.

You... suggest water cooling? Is the sky blue? :p

$150 water cooled, or $35 HSF... being that I'm the "budget overclocker" type, I'd go for the HSF, and of course not buy a quadcore.

I looked into doing that, but with the position of my CPU socket and the assortment of heatsinks I had, the fan/heatsinks would have been pushing against the hard drive by that time, so a no go.

So, is that totally mesh on sides/top? Looks kinda cool.

Here are some pics of an Ultra MicroFly that I built just over a year ago... with SLI in it. :D No longer have that system. I currently have an X-Qpack2 for a LAN party rig... don't have pics yet. Maybe I'll take some pics if/after I get one of these Shurikens in it.

Try this one

That case measures something like 13.5" tall, 5.75" wide and 14.5" from front to back. It is my old LAN party rig (now just a spare system). A64 4000+ San Diego chip running at 3.12GHz, with a 7900GTO video card, 400GB HDD and DVDRW all packed in there. Case is aluminum and it weighs around 14 pounds (w/o the strap). Pic kind of pre-dates the current parts in it.

Pretty impressive proof-of-concept rig . And seeing those pics really make me appreciate the extra inch or two of length that the modern versions of the old QPack have. That small increase in size make the MicroFly/QPack II look so much more roomy.

Sooo...any plans as far as if and when that DFI SLI mATX comes out :D? By my rough estimation, you've got quite a few spare cases, Earthwatts PSU, and ram kits hoarded that need to be built into a rig...

EDIT: Yep, all three sides of mine are mesh.

Thanks, haha. It indeed was more of a proof-of-concept. I had stolen one of the video cards from another computer of mine rendering it useless. I used the SLI rig for a couple of LAN parties and then sold it with only one video card.

As for that DFI SLI mATX board... unless it's awesome I probably won't get it. I'm not much of a benchmark chaser so a single video card works fine for the games I play at the resolutions my monitors support.

And yes, I can build several more complete systems (minus monitor, but including "legit" Windows :p ) out of spare parts I have laying around. This is in addition to a few "spare" computers already lounging in my garage.

just out of curiosity..

if this E8400 doesnt die by april i was thinking of converting it into a lan rig for a friend of mine.

What type of case would you guys be interested in me working on?

I was actually thinkn about a ST-SG03 shugo.

It's a little hard to tell from the pictures - is the rad for the H20-120 Compact mounted internally in there? If so, that's a pretty impressive feat. But you would be doing a fully custom watercooling setup, I assume :)?

something simular. Only with a larger radiator.

Or i was tempted to externally mount a radiator on a QPack. Have the barbs point inside on the case with quick disconnect when i needed to take the top case up.

Couple of things i have brewing. :D
