Finally saw Hurt Locker on cable. What was the big deal?

It was enjoyably suspenseful but predictable. It was good, but how did this movie win so many awards? It reminded me of an HBO special, and Im not knocking HBO because they do make good movies, but this was no Oscar winner IMO.

I dunno, maybe movies are just that bad these days that a movie like this can sweep the Oscars. More power to them, but I wasnt terribly impressed. Perhaps what really influenced the movie for me was the main character looks almost exactly like the guy that works at 7-11 that Ive known for years. I would take his picture but he would probably freak out, so that wont happen. But seriously if you are in Fort Worth, stop by the University and White Settlement Rd 7-11 and prepare to be amazed. Same hair cut, same facial features and eye color and the same goofy grin....the spitting image.

I haven't seen it yet. It's DVR'd, but haven't taken time to watch it. I know the movie is a HUGE deal around here because Jeremy Renner is a Modesto boy...

I'll reserve judgment on the movie until after I watch it.

well my personal opinion is that the director used to be married to Cameron and the society as a whole decided that avatar shouldn't have all the money AND sweep the Oscars.

Was this movie amazing in every way? No.

I think if you like suspense like I do, you will like this movie. It pretty much permeates the entire film. Its enjoyable, thats for sure, but dont think too much or you'll start to figure out the movie before scenes are shown. I was even saying words from the dialogue before the actors said them, and Ive never seen it before. They kept it simple on purpose I guess. But youll still enjoy it.

IMHO you really had to see it in theaters, I saw it when it first came out at a late night show around 10:30pm I was with a friend who just got back from Iraq as well. We were the only ones in the theater, and the sound was up loud. We were literally on the edge of our seats. I think that experience was why it won awards, its a shame most theater crowds aren't like that so it kills the vibe, but I would expect many of the awards screenings are held in the proper conditions to be conducive for that kind of suspense.

It really shows you how being in a theater with crying babies / talking kids can ruin a great experience.

I disliked the movie due to its plethora of inaccuracies.

This

These guys in the movies were basically super soldiers and could do everything perfectly it seemed. For a movie that tried to be realistic they really dropped the ball on that.

Hell, if you use that kind of measure, there hasn't been a GOOD movie made ever...it doesn't matter what the subject is about, people in that business/trade/way of life will see the glaring inaccuracies...

:p

Well it's because the inaccuracies were HUGE and anyone could point it out. These guys were doing things no one like them would do.

If a movie was 100% accurate to real life, who'd want to see it?

Who wouldn't want to see a movie about Soldiers walking around a combat zone wearing reflective belts and rape whistles, and getting yelled at for wearing a fleece jacket over their uniform, instead of under it?

This movie had Evangeline Lilly in it.
We need more movies like this.
It can have as many awards as it wants.

It was a decent movie. IIRC, Hurt Locker, Avatar, and District 9 were the 3 movies up for Best Picture that I have actually seen (I haven't seen the other one that was nominated). Of those, I thought District 9 was the best. Avatar was worth seeing for the special effects but I didn't think the story was that great.

Besides all the uproar about the military inaccuracies, the character development was top notch.

On the other side of the coin, Avatar had most generic cookie cutter characters ever by a Best Picture nominee.
